O pojęciu genezy idei filozoficznych
On the Concept of the Genesis of Philosophical Ideas
view |

| cited by
Historians of philosophy use the word genesis fairly freely. Most often it is supposed to denote the beginning of a certain trend, variously understood, a problem, argument, or, broadly speaking, a certain idea. Nevertheless, as Karl Jaspers pointed aptly, the beginning is something historical, something that once happened in a given time. In this sense it is always single and unrepeatable. If, however, some trends and ideas always recur in philosophy, it is better to speak about a source, or, perhaps, a few sources than about a beginning. It seems that the use of the term „genesis” to define such a source is legitimate. A source is, however, a genesis of another tpe than beginning, because in a sense it eludes time. The impulse stimulating to philosophizing flows from the sources on and on in various epochs. The paper first discusses the genesis of philosophical ideas understood as a beginning, then genesis understood as a source.

Metafizyka genezy:

Metaphysics of Generation

The aim of the paper is to provide a systematic metaphysical account of the conceptions of generation of a individual being proposed by Aristotle and Whitehead, which are commonly regarded as radically opposite. The results are presented in diagrams 1 and 2 respectively. Principles or causes present in the diagrams make system of correlates – I try to show the way of its construction in both cases and possible transformations leading to alternative standpoints. It may be of some interest that with the help of these diagrams several basic metaphysical positions can be distinguished and compared. It appears that both systems do not differ significantly with respect to their structure: their respective components are mutually related in the same way. Essential difference lies in the conceptions of matter in both systems. I claim that different relations of matter to other components in the diagram 1 boil down to essential characteristic of matter as spatio-temporality or extensiveness in general (diagram 3). Whiteheadian matter in its turn consists of qualities – this corresponds with phenomenological notion of matter. In the end I raise a question of possible dependence between momental conception of existence and discrete conception of time.

Metaphysical Principles of Genesis
Metafizyczne zasady genezy

Newtona ostrzeżenie brzmi: fizyka odrzuca metafizykę, odzwierciedla kolizję pomiędzy fizyką Arystotelesowską i fizyką New Age.

The Problem of Genesis in the Mediaeval Philosophy

In the Middle Ages the problem of the beginning (genesis) of the world was studied in the context of an analysis of the Book of Genesis. The Biblical text was interpreted in a way that would be compatible with the reading of Plato’s Timeus. The article focuses on two mediaeval thinkers, Eriugena and Thierry of Chartres, who conducted this sort of research. Both Eriugena’s Periphyseon and Thierry’s treatise De sex dierum operibus belong to the genre of hexaemeron, that is commentaries on the Genesis. An analysis of early mediaeval hexaemerons provides an excellent opportunity to explore these keystone points of mediaeval culture which lie at the cross-roads of philosophy, science and biblical exegesis.

The Genesis of Scientific Theories

The system of scientific knowledge consists of active elements that are implicit definitions of concepts (Poincaré’s principles, Lakatos’ hard core), and passive elements (empirical laws, protective belt), formulated in the efforts to apply conceptual system to the world. The cognitive status of a statement can be reversed: definitions can be used as factual propositions and what was once factual can became definition. This reversibility rationally explains the mechanism of scientific revolutions as it is illustrated for the revolution that began with Buridan and resulted in Newton’s mechanics. Statements of impetus theory, that once belonged to protective belt of Aristotelian physics, were transformed into the hard core of Newtonian physics.

The Genesis of Scientific Theories

The main topic of this paper is embraced by the post-positivistic criticism of the empiricist approach to the philosophy of science. A special stress on the pluralism of the (meta-)methodology is laid down. On the second level we have distinguished the following two main kinds of metascientific discourse: methodology of appraisal or evaluation vs methodology of invention or discvovery. In opposition to the traditional dichotomy of the well known two contexts we do not exclude some kind of relevance between these two sorts of metascientifc inquiry. Four groups of reasons being involved in an attempt to exclude the rationalizability process of invention are then critically discussed. These four types of arguments against such a possibility of scientific heuristics (methodology of theory construction) appeal to 1) intuition, chance or unexplainability, 2) induction, 3) T-terms, and 4) predictability.Previously to this critical analysis of the arguments some attention upon preparatory issues is given. Such a role play especially: the status of methodology, historical approaches to the methodology of theory construction and rational reconstruction of the context of invention.

Tożsamość społeczna z kolei oznacza poszukiwanie sposobów i możliwości, jakimi można osiągnąć społeczny rozwój i poprawę warunków życia. Obecnie zasadnicze niebezpieczeń stwo dotyczące osobowej tożsamości leży w niesprzyjających warunkach i niedorozwoju.

O genezie informacji

In our limes there are distinguished several kinds of information, among them the following should be listed:1) intellectual information − which is generated in human brain and oriented towards social use,2) biological and cybernetic information − which is carried by specific signals and received by living organisms or technical devices,3) cosmic information − which, as a fundamental element, together with mass and energy, constitues reality; an elementary unit of this kind of information is named an infon. The following axioms are accepted:a) An infon is a photon with an infinite wave-length.b) A photon is an infon moving with the light speed.c) When this velocity differs from the light speed, an energy quantum transforms into an information quantum, i.e. into an infon.4) Owing to gathered data we can expect „information” to evolve towards becoming a philosophical category because it begins to function as „a medium of understanding” when philosophical problems are taken into consideration and worked-out.

The paper sought to present one trend of the debate carried on within the confines of 20th-century history of science, i.e. the genesis of science. Among various trends of this debate we shall distinguish one that concerns the evaluation of the significance of the main traditions in Greek philosophy (Ionian, Pythagorean-Platonic) in the precess of the constitution of science. The paper shows some solutions to this question that appear in the main trends of 20th-century history of science (externalism, internalism).

Genesis of the Scientific Revolution in Geology

The genesis of plate tectonics was the beginning of the scientific revolution in geology. Due to the analysis in Kuhn’s terminology some elements in this revolution are able to be shown. The stabilist paradigm was replaced by the mobilist one as a consequence of changing ontological presuppositions assumed in geology. Essential new information was provided by scientific discoveries in oceanography and paleomagnetism. In connection with that a growing crisis in the stabilist paradigm took place. The explaining hypotheses, for instance the hypothesis of sea-spreading and Vine-Matthews hypothesis, came into being. Next they were united into plate tectonics. The consensus among geologists appeared also indispensable. It included a reception of the new theory in the late 1960s and an acceptance of the scientific change that was revolutionary in its character.

Recognizing Genesis

The evolution-creation controversy concerns the origin of life and its main forms. In practice, however, it exists on a completely different level, a philosophical and methodological one. As a rule, proponents of both positions quarrel about whether creationism is a scientific position. Evolutionists claim that creationist conceptions are incompatible with fundamental criteria identifying science. The main criterion is the principle of naturalism: in scientific explanations we cannot resort to causes from outside the material world. The paper analyzes some arguments of both sides and supports the idea that if recognizing intelligent design is a legitimate task of many scientific enterprises then there is no good reason to exclude this possibility in biology. In the author’s opinion scientists rather than philosophers of science should be engaged in the controversy.

The Category of Genesis in Protobiology

Protobiology as a science about the origin of life is based on the idea of chemical evolution. The bioelectronics conception, however, that life is a form of electromagnetic information suggests that it is not „chemical evolution” but „evolution of information” that can be accepted as a more basic one. The paper sought to develop, within the context of biosystemogenesis, the idea of a chemical-electronic coupling in organisms (the so-called quantum seam of life). The „quantum seam of life” is a thermodynamically optimal and open quantum system in which chemical and electronic process come about. It exists owing to electromagnetic information and manifests self-synchronization, metastable energetic state, and constant properties independent of evolution. From the point of view of the electromagnetic conception of the nature of life, the category of genesis (i.e. the genesis of life or biosystems) may be understood in a broader manner than it has been done up to now. First of all, it can be understood as electromagnetic biosystemogenesis. The life of earth would originate in information whose bearer was the electromagnetic field. Philosophical implications of this statement are discussed in the paper. It is suggested that nanotechnology and quantum optoelectronics may provide new possibilities of how to empirically test electromagnetic biosystemogenesis and the idea of the evolution of information. The significance of the concept of genesis may be of key importance for the models suggesting new, more adequate scenarios of the processes of the origin of life.

The Origin of Human Life

The above question can be answered briefly: the human zygote is a person, for man is a person. Thus formulated question is not a question that is asked by the biologist who does research on the origins of human life. Its answer is involved in the philosophical debate on the very concept of person. Here we deal with two separate scientific disciplines: philosophy (philosophical anthropology, to be precise) and biology (especially embryology). The discussion on the status of the human zygote demands respect for the competencies of either science. Otherwise, we might neutralize the concept of person, or demand of the biologist (as a biologist) to transcend the empirical character of his discipline towards philosophical abstraction. Let us add that the concept of person functions also in theology and law. Therefore the question about the personal status of the human zygote transcends the competencies of biology. The biologist, precisely speaking embryologist, will not dwell on the antropological disputes about the concept of the human person. Rather, he will ask whether the human zygote is a man, that is a representative of the homo sapiens species, according to generic category. Respectively, we have two questions referring to the same zygote, or the primary stadium of our human existence: the questions about its human and personal status. Do they in fact concern the same, or we are dealing here with two, equal dimensions of human existence? The large number of answers giventoday to the question about the status of the zygote and successive developmental stages of man arouse doubts as to the unambiguous status of the zygote. One thing is certain in this discussion: we were all zygotes in the beginning. The way to answer them is, as it seems, first to make the concept of person more accurate, and then to answer how for we can refer this concept to the human zygote.

The Humanism of Despair as a Result of the Death of God in Contemporary Culture

The philosophy of the death of God, pronounced by Friedrich Nietzsche in 1882, resulted in many negative consequences experienced in contemporary culture. The Nietzschean critique of the classical hierarchy of values inspired radical declaration about the death of metaphysics and the end of human history. In its form developed in deconstructive postmodernism, this philosophy proclaims the dissolution of the human subject. Consistently, it rejects the very concept of human person and tries to reduce human existence to the level of psychoanalitic, social and/or cultural phenomena. In this conceptual framework, either the classical version of humanism must be questioned or its nihilistic reinterpretation, in terms of a humanism of despair, should be adopted.

Globalism and Religion

Globalism denotes the most recent direction of economical and political changes that are going on in the world. The new structures presuppose some ideological assumptions: a conception of man and cultural dominating trends. This is a naturalistic and liberalistic vision of man, a vision that does not take into account his transcendent dimension.Encounters and controversies between globalism and religion, that is Christianity, focus on the conception of man. Christianity assumes, proclaims and safeguards the conception of man as person. In this view person comes from the Personal God and goes towards Him; God is man’s ultimate source of existence and the Highest Good at which man is supposed to aim through his life. The personalistic conception of man requires that in the globalistic processes man should occupy the primary place. All structures, including economical and political, should take man in all personal dimensions, together with the ethical and religious ones.Christianity as a universalistic religion is not against globalization; it takes care that its related processes are carried out in the full truth about man and aim at the authentic good of all people.
