Aydan Turanli Martin Heidegger on Technology: A Response to Essentialist Charge
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Martin Heidegger is one of the major philosophers influencing discussions of the condition of technology in the modern era especially with his very much debated article, “The Question Concerning Technology.” However, his views of technology are variously interpreted. Andrew Feenberg and Don Ihde accuse Martin Heidegger of being “essentialist.” Feenberg also implies that Heidegger is a technological determinist and a strong pessimist. On the other hand, Iain Thomson asserts that Heidegger’s view of technology is not essentialist in the traditional sense. David Edward Tabachnick also underlines that essentialism in Heidegger does not necessarily include determinism. In this article, I defend Heidegger against Feenberg’s essentialist charge. First, I summarize Feenberg’s interpretation of Heidegger. Secondly, I criticize Feenberg to show that his accusations against Heidegger are unjustified.Martin Heidegger, özellikle çok tartışılan “Teknolojiye İlişkin bir Soru” makalesiyle modern dönemde teknolojinin durumuyla ilgili tartışmaları etkileyen en önemli filozoflardan biridir. Ancak, onun teknoloji görüşleri çeşitli şekillerde yorumlanmıştır. Andrew Feenberg ve Don Ihde, Heidegger’i, özcü olmakla suçlarlar. Diğer yandan, Iain Thomson, Heidegger’in teknoloji görüşünün geleneksel anlamda özcü olmadığını iddia eder. David Edward Tabachnick’de, Heidegger’de özcülüğün, determinizmi içermediğinin altını çizer. Bu makalede, Feenberg’in özcü suçlamasına karşı Heidegger’i savunacağım. İlk olarak, Feenberg’in Heidegger yorumunu özetleyeceğim. İkinci olarak, Heidegger’e karşı suçlamalarının temelsiz olduğunu göstermek için Feenberg’i eleştireceğim.

Çetin Balanuye Education of Emotions as a Possibility of Handling Value Conflicts
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
It is widely accepted that one of the most crucial issues in philosophy of education is related to the concept of value. The contemporary debates on the concept of value and the power of education to deal with value conflicts revolve around two basic questions. First: How can I live personally flourishing life with a responsibility for the universe in general and others in particular? Second: In what ways can education help us find a common ground between living well and being morally good? It is argued in this piece of work that education of emotions can be reconsidered as a promising remedy for this dilemma. A Deweyian account of desirable habit formation is elaborated, endorsed and defended, yet possible objections to the account is taken into consideration.Eğitim felsefesinin en merkezi sorunlarından birinin değer kavramıyla ilişkili olduğu büyük ölçüde kabul görür.

Mehmet Hilmi Demir Stalnaker’s Hypothesis: A Critical Examination of Hájek’s Counter Argument
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
According to what is known as Stalnaker’s hypothesis, the probability of a conditional statement is equal to the conditional probability of the statement’s consequent given the statement’s antecedent. Starting with David Lewis, many have attempted to show that this hypothesis cannot be true for non-trivial probability functions. These attempts, which are known as the triviality results, cannot refute the hypothesis conclusively, because the triviality results usually rest on controversial assumptions such as the closure of conditionalization. In addition to the triviality results, there is one often cited argument against Stalnaker’s hypothesis that does not seem to rest on a controversial assumption. The argument is Alan Hájek’s 1989 reductio argument, which purportedly shows that Stalnaker’s hypothesis leads to outright contradiction. In this paper, I critically evaluate Hajek’s reductio argument and show that it is not a valid argument. His argument is simply an instance of the petitio principii fallacy. On the positive side, I argue that my critical evaluation of Hajek’s argument brings us one step closer to the reconciliation of the analytical and empirical examinations of Stalnaker’s hypothesis.

Funda Neslioğlu Serin “The Strong Programme” and the Rationality Debate
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Various approaches have been made for understanding the nature of science and scientific knowledge. The social factors that played some role during the choice of scientific theories (like the theory of evolution) in the nineteenth century popularised the opinion that the scientific knowledge is the subject of a sociological research. During the ongoing discussions, one of the explanation or the justification models that was proposed is known as “the Strong Programme.” The main claim of “the Strong Programme” is that the social factors have a determining role for the choice of scientific theories, rather than the rational and universal criteria one may expect. Hence, those who were behind this view rejected all of the rational analyses made for the sciences and the scientific methods. In this paper, we try to investigate the validity of the claims of “the Strong Programme,” and to clarify whether it is possible to understand the real nature of science without any rational approach. It is argued that it would be insufficient to determine the content of the science merely by the social factors, the natural facts might be meaningful by themselves as well.

abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The concept of Aletheia which corresponds to an epistemological and ontological awareness over about the disclosedness, occupies fundemental places in the thought-systems of both Heidegger and Plato. Either of the philosophers have not only made an examination on the origin and the possibility of this concept; but they have also made an inquiry on the original value of its existence-forms, which are revealed in the relationship of the concept with the work of art. The relation between cognition and existence is a hierarchical onto-epistemological conception of Plato, where the human mind and body capacity is directly related to its ontic and epistemological existence when evaluated in the context of the forms of existence that it can know the truth from; for Heidegger, the ontic opens a door to knowing that because it merely an ontic is, and in this way comes an understanding that every existence, including the existence of the artwork, can be associated with the act of knowing.

Pınar Türkmen Birlik John Locke’ta Sözcüklerin Kurulumundan Toplumun Kurulumuna Uzlaşım Unsurunun Rolü
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The most distinguishing aspect of Locke’s thoughts pertaining to language is conventionalism. In Locke’s understanding of language, the factor of conventionalism emerging as a part of connection between words and ideas comes into prominence both through its being considered as the only element to ensure approaching this possibility and through its providing the possibility of communication although it has been presented as an insufficiency in language at once in his aim to obtain exact knowledge. So much so that, in Locke be it truth, be it knowledge or be it meaning, these exist in the unity of communication and in the conventionalism itself that essentially establish this unity as well as that they exist in those demonstrated which provide the projection of actual existence. This conventional characteristic of language, for sure, in the most significant element that leads us to deal with the social aspect of language. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the factor of conventionalism in his understanding of language from an integrative perspective that will take into account his thoughts regarding the society as well. On the other hand, when it is considered that language is closely related to both the world and the way it conceives and designs the society in which we live, it can be assumed that Locke, by organizing the language on the basis of conventionalism, wanted to reach an ideal society through getting rid of the words’ erroneous and deceptive abstract generality and obtaining exact knowledge. From this point of view, our study aims to reveal with an integrative perspective the role which Locke assigned to the factor of “conventionalism” both in organization of the words and in organization of the society thanks to mediation.
