Whiteheadowskie inspiracje filozofii Józefa Życińskiego
Whiteheadian Inspirations of the Józef Życiński’s Philosophy

Three issues of Życiński’s philosophy are inspired by the process philosophy of A.N. Whitehead’s and his followers: (i) a comprehension of event-dynamic structure of nature as a creative process towards novelty, (ii) a link between the rationality field hypothesis and Whitehead’s concepts of eternal objects and potentiality, (iii) a panentheistic idea of God that emerges from the theory of God’s two natures (aspects). Starting from an analysis of the ontic structure of nature and heading for a grasp of the world’s immanent aspect of God, Życiński follows the neoclassical path of natural theology that is close to processualism. A discovering of transcendent God, that reveals himself in natural processes as the rationality field, brings important consequences for an explanation of God’s attributes and His relation to relatively autonomous creatures. Multithreaded processual inspirations enable us to see those aspects of Życiński’s philosophy and theology in a broad metaphysical context.

The article considers the most important theodicean problems in Józef Życiński’s texts. The author of the article examines the issue of the existence of God and evil taking into account the following arguments: (1) the argument from God’s kenotic presence in nature, (2) the argument from an unjustified extrapolation of the feeling of absurdity, (3) argument from the limits of God’s omnipotence, which includes (3a) the argument from the price for the another direction of evolution, and (3b) the argument from transworld depravity, (4) the argument from an analogy between limitation claims in logic and mathematics and ontological determinants of suffering, (5) the argument from moral beauty, persuasion and mystery.

Some of Topological and Methodological Aspects of Quantum Cosmology Models

In this paper we address some critical remarks to two leading models quantum cosmology – Hawking-Hartle model and Vilenkin model. Both models appeal to different mathematical frameworks to reconstract of first moments of Universe ewolution. The first one presents wave function of the Universe using Feynman’s formalism of quantum mechanics — path integrals. The other one shows the beginnig of the Universe as quantum tunneling process. The authors of above mentioned approaches to quantum cosmology claims, that these mechanisms describe creation of the Universe ex nihilo. The main aim of tis paper is to show a weakness of such interpretations. Firstly, Gordon McCabe’s criticism is presented. His analyses are based on topological concept of cobordism. In the second step, we show that the concept of ex nihilo should be rather understood as “zero-pointgeometry” with a material field.

Inne umysły
Other Minds

In presented paper we consider the problem of knowledge of other minds. We develop a systematic argument against this theory that has come to known as argument from analogy. We look to the philosophical and psychological ideas whose meaning boils down to the claim that metacognitive processes so critical for self-awareness, self-knowledge emerge and develop in a strong connection with the process of attribution of mental states to others. We spin in one position some philosophical traditions, dating historically from Augustine, Descartes to Strawson and Davidson. Then, we combine philosophical discourse with the findings provided in developmental psychology, which show that children’s attributions of their own mental states emerge in a strong correlation with the attribution of mental states to others. Next, we combine those psychological findings with philosophical discussion of the conceptual conditions for the attribution of mental states. At the same time, we show that a key issue in the design of an argument against the theory which recognizes the primacy of the first person or uses in some sense the argument from analogy in solving the problem of other minds, is to refer to cognitive conditions for the acquisition of language and its functioning which we find historically in Descartes’ works and recently in works of cognitive psychologists.

Richard Dawkins’ Concept of Universal Darwinism and Naturalistic Attempts to Explain Culture

The idea of universal Darwinism is not new. It can be traced already in the K. Darwin’s works. Today, it comes back to life with a vengeance, especially through the publication of the British evolutionist Richard Dawkins. In the opinion of supporters of universal Darwinism, in all conditions where there is a population of multiplying objects that do not produce identical copies, and there is a selection, by which not all objects survive, there is a Darwinian evolution. The algorithmic character of evolution becomes the basis for justifying the application of Darwinian mechanisms to explain the phenomenon of human culture. In the article the concept of universal Darwinism altogether with its historical context is presented. The idea becomes the basis to provide naturalistic theories of culture and its evolution namely weak and strong theory of gene-culture coevolution. Some critical analysis of presented concepts is also submited.

Pasja łączenia – katolicka teologia naturalna Józefa Życińskiego
The Passion for Unifying: Catholic Natural Theology of Józef Życiński

The passion for unifying is one of the most characteristic features of Józef Życiński’s thought. It is also noticeable in the area of natural theology which he proposes. This theology can be named ‘catholic’. Życiński takes care of compatibility of his results with the doctrine of The Catholic Church. He tries to unify different streams and points of view in one conception. He stands for methodological naturalism which is not inconsistent with looking for ultimate explanations of reality beyond science. Życiński accepts panentheism inspired by philosophy of Whitehead as the most plausible theory of correlation between God and the world. This paper shows the project of synthesis which can be found in books and articles by Życiński, points the elements which his natural theology is built of, and indicates the questions and problems connected with this theory. Finally, there is shown the importance of ycinski’s natural theology which ranks to “new natural theologies”.

Kościół a ewolucja – zasady dialogu
Church and Evolution – Principles of Dialogue

Years ago Archbishop Prof. Józef Życiński put forward his own model of cognitive integration that takes into account the sacred, the beauty of nature, modern scientific discoveries as well as philosophical and theological theses. In this intellectual undertaking, bringing together in a single perspective poetic imagery and the Christian affirmation of nature, openness to new ideas of science and the quest for a new metaphysics, an important role was to be played by the Christian interpretation of Darwinism. The task still awaits realization. However, it seems that the Author’s death set in motion contrary tendencies. The article presents a brief overview of contemporary tensions between Darwinism and the Church in the context of the integration model proposed by Józef Życiński and signalizes these contrary trends. Outlining, as the title suggests, principles of dialogue, it points to modern man’s ambivalent attitude to cognition and nature as well as to the need to take into account the perspective of Fides et ratio, so vital in the teaching of Pope John Paul II, along with the so called criterion of “Christian rationality” that arises from it. Of help in this task may be further search for the truth about the world recorded in two books: the Book of Nature and the Book of Revelation as well as efforts to develop appropriate methodology of reading them.

Moderately Pluralistic Methodology
Umiarkowanie pluralistyczna metodologia
abstract |

The paper outlines and discusses the major tenets of moderately pluralistic methodology. The latter is juxtaposed to J. Życiński’s principle of natural interdisciplinarity. It instantiates scientific pluralism as a domain-specific agenda for research. The symbolic and causal understanding are integrated in this methodological conception by means of a specific kind of counterfactual reasoning, which is coined the delimiting counterfactual. It makes the moderately pluralistic methodology applicable to non-experimental research.
Artykuł prezentuje i omawia zasadnicze założenia koncepcji umiarkowanie pluralistycznej metodologii. Ta ostatnia jest zbieżna z J. Życińskiego zasadą naturalności interdyscyplinarnej. Reprezenuje ona szeroko rozumiany nurt pluralizmu naukowego w zakresie sposobu prowadzenia badań w danej dziedzinie.

Józef Życiński’s Meta-Objective View of the Relation between Science and Religion

The dialogue between science and religion held by Józef Życiński presents a vision, in which the two disciplines exist complementarily and complete each other. In his opinion the basis of the dialogue is a reliable methodology, in which the very fundamental issue is methodological naturalism. Życiński suggests that apparent conflicts stem from incorrect interpretation of the Holy Bible or fundamentalist understanding of science. He therefore provides the right, in his opinion, interpretation of the Book of Bible and the Book of Nature. Józef Życiński demonstrates that in Christianity we deal with affirmation of rationality. This, among others, is the reason we should talk about Christian sources and inspirations of contemporary science.

Filozoficzny kontekst nauki
Philosophical Context of Science
view |

Drawing on the analysis developed by M. Heller and J. Życiński in a work published 25 years ago, the paper shows that science is essentially “nested” in philosophy, because various philosophical assumptions are present in it. Five types of such assumptions are considered: (a) philosophical conditionings of empirical sciences; (b) philosophical themata; (c) philosophical implications of empirical theories; (d) philosophical theses employed in scientific argumentation; (e) philosophical criteria of scientificity. Some possible interpretations of the first type listed are analyzed. They may be: (1) defined in terms of logical inference; (2) treated as the necessary or/and sufficient condition; (3) taken as presupposition (as understood in pragmatics); (4) interpreted psychologically as reasons for acceptance; (5) seen as the condition of understanding of scientific claims. The considerations developed in the paper show that those assumptions do not constitute a homogeneous group. Some are the a priori of science in that sense that rationality of doing science depend on their acceptance; some—for example, so-called ontological commitments—result from an acceptance of a certain theory; some others—interpreted, following E. McMullin, as non-standard epistemic factors—are a matter of choice and are historically changeable, what brings the issue of rational reasons for their acceptance; and still others are theses which belong both to science and to philosophy, what brings the issue of their mutual falsifiability. The presence of philosophical assumptions in science nevertheless indicates that neither methodological isolationism, nor attempts to subordinate one kind of cognition to the other capture correctly the relation between science and philosophy.

In the article the views of Archbishop Józef Życiński on the relationship between nature and mathematics are outlined. Życiński states that formal structures create the basic level of nature. This enables him to explain the effectiveness of mathematics in the scientific research of the material world. He therefore accepts Platonism and the thesis of mathematicity of nature. In the article some of the difficulties of this concept are pointed out.

The article is devoted to problems connected with a concept of eternal present. I analyze two such conceptions of maximally extended divine “now”: proposed by Stump and Kretzmann and proposed by Whitehead. Yet the article begins with the presentation Thomas Aquinas’ conception of eternity. On the ground of this theory “eternal now’ has only metaphorical meaning.

Panentheism

In this paper I try to present some main origins, varieties, motives and ideas of the philosophical and theological movement called “the panentheistic turn”. Particular attention is paid to the Ch. Hartshorne’s combinatorial analyses (based on “the law of polarity”) and to the J. Życiński’s conception of “the field of rationality”. I distinguish five forms or domains of the contemporary panentheism. The first of them—the linguistic one—uses the preposition in or spatial metaphors to express the relation between God and the world. The second—the (inter)cultural panentheism—is the result of searching for a common theology to many different religions. The third type—the Christian panentheism – interprets some main dogmas of Christian faith in the spirit of kenotic theology. At an end the ontological panentheism can be defined as the metaphysics (of God and world) emerged from the German idealism and the process philosophy. Its newest kind is the scientific panentheism based on the idea of emergence. After these distinctions I compare the ontological panentheism with the classical theism. In my opinion there are some irremovable differences between both options. I also defend the thesis that the main arguments given by the panentheists against the classical theism do not constitute the sufficient reasons to prefer their position.
