Arman Besler Syllogistic Expansion in the Leibnizian Reduction Scheme
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The standard inferential scheme of traditional assertoric syllogistic, based on the initial chapters of Aristotle’s Prior Analytics, employs single-premissed deductions, i.e., principles of immediate inference, in the reduction of imperfect valid moods to perfect moods. G. W. Leibniz (among others) has attempted to replace this scheme with his own version of syllogistic reduction (the core of which is, again, based on Aristotle’s observations on syllogistic transformation), in which the principles of immediate inference themselves are modelled as (and hence justified by means of) valid syllogisms. This paper examines the place of this modelling, i.e. syllogistic expansion, of immediate inferences in Leibniz’s scheme of syllogistic reduction (which he describes in his Nouveaux Essais and presents in one of his papers on syllogistic), and shows through this examination that the tenability of the whole scheme actually hinges on the interpretation to be given for the categorical propositional forms. Geleneksel asertorik tasım kuramının, Aristoteles’in Birinci Çözümlemeler’inin ilk bölümlerine dayanan standart çıkarım planı, eksik geçerli kipleri tam/mükemmel kiplere indirgemek için bazı tek öncüllü dedüktif çıkarımları, yani dolaysız çıkarım ilkelerini kullanır. G. W. Leibniz, bu planın yerine, özü itibariyle yine Aristoteles’in tasımsal dönüştürme hakkındaki gözlemlerine dayanan, kendi tasımsal indirgeme örneğini koymaya girişenlerden birisidir.

Uğur Aytaç Is the Truth Condition Superfluous for Defeasibility Theories of Knowledge?
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Defeasibility theories aim to reach a plausible definition of knowledge by finding strategies to exclude true beliefs based on faulty justifications. Different philosophers have advanced with their own understandings of undefeated justification. Zagzebski (1994) indicates that the strong defeasibility condition violates independence between truth and justification because undefeated justification never leads to false beliefs. Following this, Zagzebski and some other philosophers who pursue a similar line of reasoning (e.g., Merricks, 1995) conclude that undefeated justification entails truth. In this paper, I argue that the truth condition is not superfluous by presenting an example of undefeated justification that does not entail truth. My claim is that beliefs about metaphysical questions (e.g., Does God exist?) can have undefeated justifications. Nonetheless, such undefeated justifications are not capable of assigning truth to the beliefs that they support. Sarsılabilirlik kuramları makul bir bilgi tanımına ulaşabilmek için hatalı gerekçelendirmelere dayalı doğru inançları eleme stratejisini güder. Farklı felsefeciler kendilerine özgü sarsılabilirlik anlayışları geliştirmiştir. Sarsılmaz gerekçelendirmeler hiçbir zaman yanlış inançların dayanağı olmadığından Zagzebski (1994) katı sarsılabilirlik şartının inancın doğruluğu ile gerekçelendirilmesi arasındaki bağımsızlığı ortadan kaldırdığını ifade eder. Bunu takiben, Zagzebski ve yine benzer görüşleri savunan bazı felsefeciler (örneğin, Merricks, 1995) sarsılmaz gerekçelendirmenin zorunlu olarak doğruluğu beraberinde getirdiği sonucuna varır. Bu makalede, sarsılmaz gerekçelendirmelerin her zaman doğru inanca ulaşmaması durumuna örnek göstererek, doğruluk koşulunun lüzumsuz olmadığını iddia ediyorum. İddiama göre metafizik sorulara (örneğin: Tanrı var mıdır?) ilişkin inançlar sarsılmaz gerekçelendirmelere sahip olabilirler. Buna rağmen söz konusu gerekçelendirmeler destekledikleri inançlara doğruluk atfedemez.

Serpil Durğun Richard Rorty’de Dayanışma Umudu
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
In Rorty's liberal political discourse, hope does have a central importance. Hopefulness, which is fed by the increase of human solidarity, implies faith and belief in a better world and better people. This belief is intended to increase our susceptibility to the suffering and degradation of other people, in other words to extend the "we-feeling” to maximum extent. Extension of this emotion always manifests itself in the form of an inclusion that does not unify the other and does not interfere with the other in official ways. In such an inclusion, each person treats the other as "one of us" and the limits of the segment considered as "one of us" gradually widens. Training of such manipulation of emotions makes this extension possible. Art and literature products occupy a dominant place in such training. Thus, the rational culture of the Enlightenment leaves its place to – a poetized culture - the culture in Rorty's liberal utopia. At this very point, the hope to believe that the world could be made a more liveable place by the human effort or in other words, by being hopeful, constitutes the Archimedes' point of Rorty's liberal utopia. He justifies that hopefulness and reality, which are an argument for our ability to create better worlds and people, always depend on our active contributions, attentions and goals. In this context, if we have faith in hope and our own light, Rorty believes that our democratic values will increasingly grow. So, once democracy is comprehended as a development of political and ethical consequences, hopefulness which is arm-in-arm with the ethical impulse in the heart of Rorty's liberal utopia emerges as democracy. Declining the 'obedient players' conception immanent to the traditional philosophy, Rorty places the notion of 'we, the mankind, can make the difference', to the center of the liberal utopia. Here, the notion of thinking that we can make such a difference emerges as a hope in Rorty's liberal utopia.

Hatice Turan Sıradanlaşan Teknoloji: Bir Kötülük Deneyimine Doğru
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Modern subject experiences new ways of thinking and being through technological developments and reproduces itself in a constantly changing lifestyle. The changing and developing technological tools have a direct influence on the way in which the subject is experiencing and acting. It is possible to observe both positive and negative reflections of this influence. While on the one hand there is the evolving world and its positive innovations; on the other hand, some novel processes that compress the subject and drag it to an illusion continue to occur. In this article, the relationship between technological developments and evil will be debated from the perspectives of two important thinkers of Critical Theory. First, Herbert Marcuse’s ideas on One-Dimensional subject will be discussed and then, his deductions will be evaluated parallel to Theodor W. Adorno’s conceptual analysis concerning evil. Along with this analysis, the possibility of experiences of selfhood and otherness will be questioned and in the end, the various possible relationships of evil with the processes of sameness and standardization will be discussed.

Melike Molaci Derrida’nın Cinsiyet Farklılığı Düşüncesi: Gelecek Olan Bir Erteleme Politikası
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Derrida, who has deconstructed various texts of history of philosophy, deciphers the construction of the tradition characterized by the hierarchical contrasts through tracing the words of the tradition and its moods, the things it emphasizes and ignores, the ones that it underlines and crosses out. It also means a total critique of tradition, how and for whatever reasons the dominant concepts that have always been in a relationship with its contrary in the sense of asymmetrical and hierarchical polarities like speech-writing, signifier-signified, object-subject, soul-body, mind-nature, man-woman etc. The dichotomy of man-woman or the gender difference that constitutes only one aspect of this comprehensive critique reflects the fundamental interest of this work. In the context of this duality, the implication of a possible policy will be discussed in this study by emphasizing how Derrida's deconstruction strategy and the notion of différance offer an insight in terms of gender differences.

Mustafa Bingöl Ontolojik Bağlamda Ockhamlı William Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Sonuç olarak, William’a göre Aristoteles’in kategorilerinde ifade ettiği varlık türleri “varlıksal” karşılığı olmayan dilsel ayrımlardır. This study is an attempt to evaluate William's doctrine of being. However, in philosophical history, thinking about a thinker’s view of being, trying to describe it only through their own view of being is a problematic approach. Because the debate on being is a long-standing debate extending from the Classical Greeks to the present day. For this, first, a short answer to the question "what is being?" was presented and then an explanatory evaluation was made on Aristotle, who was one of the first and most important philosophers of this debate, and ousias. The second part of this our study aims to explain the hierarchy of being that Plotinus formed through Porphyrios for the transition to the middle Ages. The aim with which the flow formed its background and refers to the essence of our study is to provide basis for William of Ockham’s doctrine of being. The last part of our study involves the evaluation of William's perception of being with reference to "terms and universals". In conclusion, according to William, the types of being Aristotle expressed in his categories are linguistic distinctions that have no "ontic" correspondence.

Mehmet Hilmi Demir Counterfactuals and Context: A Response to Brogaard and Salerno
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
According to the standard interpretation, counterfactuals fail to satisfy the following inference rules: contraposition, strengthening the antecedent and hypothetical syllogism. Contrary to the standard interpretation, Brogaard and Salerno (2008) argue that counterfactuals do satisfy these inference rules when context features are kept fixed in evaluating arguments with counterfactuals. For them, the main reason behind claiming that counterfactuals fail to satisfy these inference rules is the illicit shift in context when evaluating the arguments in question. If true, Brogaard and Salerno’s claim would have a devastating effect on the counterfactuals literature because almost the entire literature is based on the assumption that counterfactuals do not satisfy those inference rules. Given its importance, Brogaard and Salerno’s claim is examined in this paper. They are right in claiming that contextual features must be kept fixed throughout the evaluation of an argument, but the rest of their claim rests on a faulty reasoning. In the paper, I show that counterfactuals do fail to satisfy contraposition, strengthening the antecedent and hypothetical syllogism even when contextual features are kept fixed throughout the evaluation of an argument in the way Brogaard and Salerno require.

Esra Çağri Mutlu Sokrates’in Öğretmeni Diotima
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
In Plato’s Symposium, Diotima promises to teach Socrates the mysteries of eros. However, the most controversial point superseding her teachings is the fact that she is a woman. For the period when the dialogue was written, she was a female within a male-dominated environment; furthermore, she was claimed to teach something to Socrates, who was considered one of the seven sages. Thus, based on this claim, the commentators interpret Diotima in different ways. Some say that she is a fiction, some say that as a real woman she symbolizes the change in the philosophy of Plato, and some say that Diotima is rather an alter-ego of Socrates and that it is Socrates himself who speaks through her. Taking all these different interpretations into consideration, this paper will attempt to analyze in detail the gender and the teachings of Diotima.

S. Atakan Altinörs Dil Felsefesindeki Klasik Anlayışa Karşı Saussure’ün Örtük İtirazları
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Ferdinand de Saussure established linguistics as an independent science in the light of a brand new conception of language in early twentieth century. Our basic claim, which we try to justify in our paper, is that Saussure, while establishing linguistics, was implicitly defying the classical approach in philosophy of language. Thus, we tried to bring to light the approach that Saussure tacitly withstands and the philosophers from which such approach arose from. Consequently, we identified that Saussure put forward the following three major objections against classical approach of philosophy of language in his lessons and writings: 1) A linguistic sign cannot be reduced to a signifier, seeing not only that a linguistic sign does not only consist of a signifier, but also that a signifier is not identical to a word. 2) The assumption of pre-language ideas is invalid. 3) “Signification” is not a “substitution” phenomenon. We checked out these objections in relation to the views of his counterparts in the history of philosophy, whom Saussure never named.

Barış Mutlu Alasdair MacIntyre’ın Çağdaş Sorunlar Karşısında Yeni Aristotelesçiliği
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Alasdair MacIntyre, with his book After Virtue: A Study in Moral Theory tries to show how we move away from Aristotelianism, and the problems of the moral and political life of modern cultures as a result of this departure. His impressive historical reading in After Virtue continues in his other works with making his Thomistic direction clear. Through his work, he draws attention to the strengths of Aristotelian ethics within rivaling different ethical approaches. His aim in his recent work, Ethics in the Conflicts of Modernity: Essay on Desire, Practical Reasoning, and Narrative is to show that we can handle our life even today by depending on the Aristotelian terms. In this way, he tries to revive Aristotle. For, as he rightly pointed out, the reason of the disappearance of the Aristotelian philosophy from the stage of history is the fact that Aristotelian terms were not able to guide everyday lives of ordinary people. MacIntyre, with paying attention to Marx’s critics of capitalism, wants to revive Aristotelianism. He thinks that the social practices we build with Aristotelian terms will open areas of resistance that do not conform values of advanced modernity, within this modernity. What is important in these practices is “common good”. The agents carry out their potentials, their natures with this common good. What needs to be done is to discipline the wishes, in this good way of life according to goods, that is, to virtues. As the result of this discipline, we learn the reasons to justify what we have decided, what we have done, so that we can make our own doings intelligible for the other members of the community. MacIntyre thinks that we can implement this Aristotelian outline to our lives and gives some important answers to Bernard Williams’s critique of Aristotle, who is one of the most important moral philosophers of this age. In this work, we will consider the reading of MacIntyre’s Neo-Aristotelian reading by paying attention to his latest work.

Sezen Bektaş Bilgiyi Nasıl Temsil Edebiliriz?: Bir Örnek Olarak Sorular ve Sorgulayıcı Mantık
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
This article, in its most general form, seeks to determine the rationale of the inquiries carried out within the discovery process. In other words, this article is to provide a simple and generalized explanation of how the inquiries that end with the acquisition of new pieces of knowledge proceed. For this reason, I will try to exemplify the logic of any act that can be called "creativity" rather than just the discoveries in the history of science. I will examine not only the discovery of a historically new phenomenon, but also how a phenomenon as widespread as the perception of something previously unknown will occur in personal history is going to be examined. The main sources for this will be the epistemology on which J. Hintikka is based on the interrogative logic operated during the acquisition of information and the erotic logic that M. Koralus and S. Mascarenhas use to explain the psychology of the act of thinking. I will refer to the first source with the aim of developing a philosophical perspective on representing knowledge and introducing the practice of inquiry as a form of representation. The second source will be referred to show that we are able to rationalize the experiences of failures as well as successful interrogation processes, and to develop a response to the question of how human brain works, from our ability to answer the questions in general. Finally, I would like to propose a question ontology that we can use to classify information in the basis of all these theories. I will briefly mention about the benefits of a system that will group all the questions that can be basically asked under certain headings and tags about their forms and contents.

Chantal Mouffe, who has been contributing to the trajectory of political philosophy for almost fifty years mostly in collaboration with Ernesto Laclau, recently published an article to signal what her political theory finally looks like based on her previous research presented rather in a nutshell fashion. This paper aims at developing an argument for the justification of three remarks based on the program developed in Mouffe's aforementioned latest work: 1) Mouffe is right in her claim that the existing liberal democratic practices of politics are far from responding to current crisis of politics, as they fail to develop relevant ontological convictions to understand the very notion of 'conflict'. 2) Nevertheless, the agonistic relief suggested by Mouffe herself to tackle with the contemporary challenges, which cannot be taken by liberal democracies as such, also falls short and cannot go beyond making moral recommendations for it also lacks an underlying ontological force. 3) Development of a Spinozistic power ontology -together with the conception of 'the ruler' as a 'modus'- is a necessary condition if we are to benefit from Mouffe's agonistic relief.

Kant, with his project of “the critique of pure reason,” aimed at 1) deciding where metaphysics has legitimate claims, and 2) showing where metaphysics has groundless pretensions and setting necessary limits to pure reason thereupon. In his moral philosophy, Kant claimed that —albeit as a condition of possibility— there must be moral a priori knowledge in our reason. On the other hand, Nietzsche, performing a different critical philosophy, 1) made contingent the formal structure which Kant had universalized by showing that subject —and its reason— is constructed on an empirical ground, and 2) claimed that, subject, who is a living being, has an intellect which is capable of producing knowledge potentially beneficial for itself or the human species. This article aims to show how Nietzsche took Kant’s critique a step forward via his perspectivist process episteme-ontology and his genealogical method; and how he transformed the critique into “the critique of pure subject.”
