Filip Ivanovic Philosophy as a Way of Life in Maximus the Confessor
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The aim of the paper is to give a condensed presentation of the view on philosophy by one of the most important Church fathers and Byzantine thinkers, Maximus the Confessor. According to him the true Christian philosophizes three things, which are the commandments, the dogmas and the faith, so that “the commandments separate the mind from passions, the dogmas introduce it to the knowledge of beings, and the faith introduces it to the contemplation of the Holy Trinity”. In this way he defines the threefold spiritual development, which revolves around three kinds of philosophy: practical philosophy, natural philosophy and theological philosophy. These correspond to the participation in being, well-being and eternal-being, and play a core role on the goal of the Christian life; assimilation to God, i.e., deification. In addition, here the philosophy is seen as training for death, which was already present in ancient philosophizing, and thus these views of philosophy represent a connection between the ancient philosophical considerations and Christian faith which is the tradition to which Maximus eminently belongs.

Václav Ježek Michael Psellos and Philo of Alexandria: The Immanence of God and Eclectic Philosophy as a Way of Life
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The following announcement looks at Michael Psellos and Philo of Alexandria, two authors from different contexts and periods. It attempts to show how both authors, working within a given dogmatic tradition, sought to support and verify this tradition by producing an eclectic philosophical synthesis, drawing on and reconciling various philosophical currents. It shows how the Aristotelian categories were used as well as other philosophical techniques in both authors to address God’s immanence, transcendence and divine personalism. In the context of Philo of Alexandria the use of Greek philosophy, coupled with Judaism in the context of exegetical imagination, leads him to the discovery of God’s energies or powers, and their mediating role between God and the human being. Psellos comments on Gregory of Nazianzus’ theology, and the heresy of Eunomios within the Aristotelian categories of relation coupled with diversions into ideas, such as the superiority of oracles’ revelation in the thought of Aristides. This paper does not seek to compare shared concepts between these two authors as much as to show the method, which seeks out to produce an original thought by commenting on the existing and accepted dogma.

Antonia Kakavelaki The Notion of “πνεῦμα” (spirit) in the Work of John Philoponus
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The notion of spirit (in Greek “πνεῦμα”) was a central notion of two ancient traditions: the medical and the philosophical tradition of ancient Greece and the neoplatonic philosophical one. In this paper we will examine the way in which a Byzantine philosopher of the 6th century, John Philoponus, handled this notion from a neoplatonic point of view, and how he assimilated the Aristotelian, the medical and the neoplatonic “πνεῦμα” theory in a single conception. Philoponus’ career can be divided into two periods: the one during which he was studying under Ammonius and the one during which he was writing in his own name, expressing his Christian convictions as a Byzantine philosopher, and criticizing neoplatonic doctrines opposed to the Christian dogma. We shall, thus, also present the refutation he gives to the neoplatonic theory of “πνεῦμα”, during the second period of his career.

Athanasia Lyckoura Georgios Scholarios on sorrow
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
This paper seeks to explore Gennadios Scholarios’ views on sorrow. Scholarios studied and summarized Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae, the annotation of which occurs in “OEuvres complètes de Georges Scholarios”, Vol.VI). Scholarios’ treatise on sorrow is a chapter included to the total writings and corresponds to the exact Aquinas’ Prima Secundae’s chapters (see, Ιa-ΙΙae, 35-39). Scholarios’ reception of Aquinas’ ethics is approached through the concupiscible passions where sorrow is included. The comparison of the two texts provides useful edification, firstly as to the differences and convergences emerging, and secondly as to the reasons why Scholarios chose to emphasize on Aquinas. This method pointed out Scholarios’ critical perspective towards the passion of sorrow, a conclusion that asserts the autonomy of his thought.

Spyros P. Panagopoulos The philosophical contribution of a homo byzantinus: The De omnifaria doctrina of Michael Psellus (1017/1018-1078 A.D)
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Michael Psellus was one of the most erudite and prolific thinkers of the Byzantine Middle Ages. His oeuvre includes historical writings, philosophical treatises and commentaries, theological writings, poems, speeches, legal, geographical, military and medical works as well as works on music. Psellus taught all branches of philosophy by closely reading and commenting on the works of ancient philosophers, especially on Aristotle’s logical treatises. At the same time he had a strong preference for Plato and the Neo-platonists, especially for Proclus, whom he considered as an authority among ancient authors. Psellus may not have been an innovator, but he systematically tried to reconcile the Christian dogma with the ancient philosophical traditions. In his attempts to advance philosophical learning he was often attacked, concerning his theological orthodoxy, so that he often had to be careful to distance himself from heretical doctrines. In this paper, I will present the De omnifaria doctrina, a treatise which deals with various issues, such as philosophy, theology, psychology, ethics, metaphysics, biology, cosmology etc. The author attempts to present a worldview through the prism of Christian theology and ethics. Although Psellus depends on the scientific tradition, i.e. philosophy and theology, of both Classical and Late Antiquity, the De omnifaria doctrina constitutes an original work. A second feature by which one can speak of originality in De omnifaria doctrina is how to address the content: the Byzantine polygraph scientifically demonstrates a solvent and precise knowledge in his understanding of that. Lastly, the paper will attempt to present a synthesis of both science and philosophy during the 11th century of the Byzantium era.

Elena Sobolnikova Philosophical rationalization of transpersonal mystic experience
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
In modern philosophy of religion great interest attaches to the study of mystical experience as a form of cognition. The theory of cognition through mysticism as a means of direct recognition of the divine has usually been set against indirect (logically consistent or rational) knowledge. This dichotomy of the reasonable - as against the mystical - leads to subjectivism, skepticism. The study of mystical experience as a fact of culture lets us rethink the problem of this correlation. The mind’s ability to clutch at mystical experience in its spontaneity makes it possible to hold the experience in thought, and not letting it dissolve. Identifying the rational component in the mystical act, we make a fresh attempt on the synthesis of the scientific and mystical, on interpreting mystic experience against the sweep of philosophical tradition. Our topic touches on the problem of the ratio of direct-indirect knowledge: a matter just now under active discussion in literature. Our testimony considers the specifics of mystical knowledge, shows the kind of rationality it is, and examines the disciple’s attitude towards religious authority (canonical texts etc.). We address the ‘practical’ goal of achieving the highest mystical state; we demonstrate varieties of mystical experience on the solid base of Western and Russian philosophical traditions.

Elias Tempelis «Ὁ διάλογος κόσμος ἐστὶν καὶ ὁ κόσμος διάλογος»: The early Byzantine theory of correspondence between the Platonic dialogues and the cosmic reality
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
In the late 6th century at the Neo-platonic School of Alexandria the anonymous Christian (uncertain) author of the Prolegomena to Platonic philosophy recorded a rather complete formulation of a theory about the mutual correspondence between the elements of the Platonic dialogues and the elements and causes of every cosmic reality. According to this theory, the commentator of each Platonic dialogue should pay attention to the correspondence of its elements (characters-dramatic date and place, style, way of conducting the conversation, demonstrations, problem being discussed and the good) both to the six elements of the universe (matter, form, nature, soul, intellect and divinity) and the six causes of every cosmic reality (material, formal, efficient, instrumental, paradigmatic and final). With respect to this theory the anonymous author of the Prolegomena depends to some extent on Proclus’ commentaries on Platonic dialogues. Thus, the theory is typically Neo-platonic, since it is based on analogy and hierarchy of being. It might also be seen as a pedagogical strategy which enabled the members of the School of Alexandria initially to comprehend the analogies of the elements of the Platonic dialogues to the elements and the causes of the material and the metaphysical worlds and, more importantly, to understand the Platonic doctrines.

abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by

Denis Walter Brotherly Love and Cosmopolitism in Michael Psellos’ philosophy
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The first results of my Phd-thesis regarding Michael Psellos’ practical philosophy, namely his approach on brotherly love and cosmopolitism. I will analyze passages from several texts and present first translations. Secondly I will put his arguments in context with the classical pagan, late antique and Christian ways of understanding virtue, cosmopolitism and brotherly love as well as work out his proper innovation. Michael Psellos is representative for the byzantine way of thought and its unique mixture that just begins to be analyzed by modern scholars.

Pavel Chelyshev The social philosophy of St. Symeon the New Theologian
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
In the XIX–XXth centuries materialist philosophy made a seri-ous attempt to explain the process of social development proceeding from the economic factor. But in practice, this doctrine revealed its historical ground-lessness making researchers go from the analysis of economic realities over to spiritual life of man. Creative works of Byzantine ascetic-mystic, poet and phi-losopher St. Symeon the New Theologian (949–1022), developing St. Augus-tine’s idea about coexistence of «the city of God» and «the city of man» in so-ciety set an example for this. St. Symeon speaks about Church and anti-church, which in everyday life oppose each other. Their opposition is of spiritual and moral character that defines all other differences, including economic and political ones. The philosopher considers the Church to be the community of peo-ple united in Christ by means of church sacraments, faith, hope and love into a single big organism. Anti-church, the community of people under tyranny of devil, is opposed to «the city of God». Devil draws people into peculiar net of social relations, «the body of Satan», through moral depravity. But neither technological progress nor social humanism and liberalism weaken the power of «the Prince of this world» over people, because their slavery is based on immorality and spiritual impoverishment. Opposition of these communities defines the character of historical process that will be completed in the last act of spiritual conflict, when Church wins a victory. Without this eschatological perspective history ceases to be history and loses its inner metaphysical sense.

abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
π. Festugiere, Jean Danielou, Nock, Β. Ν.

abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by

abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
