Leo Löwenthal Das Individuum in der individualistischen Gesellschaft: Bemerkungen über Ibsen
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
Ibsen’s plays can be interpreted as experiments in which the ideology of individualism is confronted with the realities of an individualistic society. The result allows of no misunderstanding. The individual has no real chance.Ibsen makes as good a case as possible for the ideology of individualism, because in the choice of his subjects he usually avoids the social problems proper, the questions of poverty and starvation, and concentrates his attention nearly exclusively on private life and spiritual conflicts. This first omission, however, turns into a radical attack. In Ibsen’s plays the soul, this fundamental conception of modern ideology, reveals itself as a focal point of all the social contradictions. In the psychological analysis within his plays, reality acquires a stronger pungency and harsher bitterness than in most of the plays of social propaganda of the time. Even in their private lives, men are mirrored as being dominated by the laws of a society based on private property and competition. A real development of their personalities is denied them. The more they attempt consciously to achieve this, the more intense grow the conflicts within themselves and with others.Ibsen returns to this fundamental conflict ever again in the relationship of man and wife, of parent and child, of lover and beloved. The indomitable influence of these social and economic forces permeates every single trait of his characters, pervades the general atmosphere of his plays : the inexorability of social conditions, which subject the destiny of the individual to the play of blind accident, is echoed in the fear and the terror that animate these plays and that embrace even amorous relationships. Abstract idealistic programs do not change such impotence as the playwright portrays, but help to safeguard it.But Ibsen is not a pessimist. The female characters that he creates represent a glance towards a freer development of humanity. They represent the ability to achieve real happiness and real enjoyment. The demands of these women, which seem egoistic but are clung to with determination of real conviction, are superior to the idealistic assurances of the men who, in reality, bow to the power of the material facts of life. There is a certain rigorousness and utopianism in Ibsen which he shares with certain tendencies of modern society, tendencies to which his conscious intentions are opposed. More characteristic for his general significance, however, is his critical attitude, that would do away with the misery of his time in order to pave the way for a life of real happiness. Because of his individualistic starting point, and in spite of it, he remains a resolute enemy of bourgeois individualism.

abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
The author of this article, M. Demangeon, is one of the chief representatives of the French school of „Géographie humaine“ which was founded by Vidal de la Blache. The social sciences, their methods and the boundary lines of their subdivisions vary in the different countries with the different national, historical and ideological conditions, and it is the effort of this school to further international cooperation of the social sciences by correlating the specific national differences of their various disciplines with the given geographical conditions of their environment. The first part of the article illustrates in an analysis of German and American geographical books the divergences in aims and methods, and its attempt to show with examples from various French books the value of historical and economic investigations as an introduction to the „Géographie humaine“. The second part describes the chief task of the discipline as an analysis of the social group in relation to its natural milieu. The third part develops the chief principles evolved by the school, namely, that there is no blind determinism in the relationship between nature and man. Man has a choice among the possibilities presented by nature. Geography should translate the relationship between nature and man into terms of the territorial environment, with due regard to its present form, without, however, neglecting its past development.

Max Horkheimer Zu Theodor Haecker: Der Christ und die Geschichte
abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
If Haecker's book on History and the Attitude of the Christian be considered as an index, there seems to be a strong humanistic current in present day Catholicism. Haecker develops in his book the Christian belief that history manifests the will of God, and that all wars, upheavals and revolutions really occur for the salvation of the soul of the individual. He opposes the modern trend to deify nation and race, and presents the elevation of man from his fall, and his return to God, as the eternal goal of all that ever happens. Because Haecker insists upon the intrinsic value of each single man, because he refuses to accept the ruling totalitarian ideology of the day, even the non-Catholic can go a long way with him in his humanism.Horkheimer, however, demonstrates that the connection between this kind of humanism and Catholicism is a very loose one. The deep understanding of human misery that is evident in Haecker's pages fits other convictions and persuasions just as well as it does a Catholic philosophy. Haecker's contention that to reject a sense and a meaning transcending the temporal world is to drive man to despair, does not invalidate the rejection of a supernatural significance. Despair is no argument against truth. Grief over the present is well justified ; nevertheless an attitude is possible which permits of a positive cooperation in the historical tasks of the day.

abstract | view |  rights & permissions | cited by
In his new book Keynes wishes to prove that since Ricardo's times liberalistic economics have proceeded from unreal premises of such nature that their theses are inapplicable to economic reality. This should explain the failure of economic theoreticians in all decisive problems of political economy. K.'s newly presented „General Theory“ is analyzed in the above article. Insofar as this theory contains true statements, it offers, in Baumann's opinion, only fresh formulations of long since known facts, and whatever new it offers, particularly the introduction of psychological factors as determinants of the economic process, turns out to be untenable. The significance of the „General Theory“ lies in the attempt at giving a theoretical justification to the neomercantilistic economic policy.
