Weryfikacja sylogistyki Arystotelesa metodą Gergonne’a
Verification of Aristotle's Theory of Syllogism by Means of Gergonne’s Method

In the present work the author explains Gergonne’s method by means of work Gergonne verifies the properties of opposition propositions, of the so called logical square and of the lawes of conversion of propositions. By means of the same method the author attempts to verify also the validity of Aristotle’s syllogistic theory, and in the first place the validity of the four principal forms of the first figure in this theory, representing axioms of the Aristotelian system of logic. Incidentally, he lays stress also on Gergonne’s implicit definitions, and Saccheri’s definitions by postulate of existence, which appear for the first time in the works of these authors.

Pojęcie wywodu inferencyjnego u Bernarda Bolzana
B. Bolzano’s Notion of Inference

The object of this study is to after an analysis of a characteristic passage in B. Bolzano’s Wissenschaftslehre. The passage refers to the notion of inference (Ableitbarkeit) and not of implication, contrary to the view of Walter Dubislav. The author’s final conclusion, based on Bolzano’s text and Prihonsy’s commentary, is that the passage in question, presenting the aspect of one classic mode of inference, the modus ponens, is a definition of inference, and that this definition is also a definition of a one-link proof.

Olympiodor o stosunku logiki do filozofii w szkole stoików, perypatetyków i platoników
Olympiodor on the Relation of Logic to Philosophy Accordin to the Stoics, the Peripatic School, and the Platonists

In the supplement to Busse’s preface to Olympiodor’s (VI c.) Commentary on the Aristotelian categories (Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca édita consilio et auctoritate Ac. Litt. Begiae Borussicae, vol. XII, P. 1 — Olympiodori Prolegomena et in Gategorias commentarium, ed. Adolphus Busse, Berolini 1902), there is a fragment with the following editorial heading De arte logica disputatio ex codicibus Laurentianis 72,1 (D) et 71,3 (F) atque editione Aldina Ven. 1503 (a) collecta (ss. X—XII). In the Greek codices there is no heading to this fragment. In Aldin’s edition the heading is as follows Prooimion tes logikes pragmateias. Also Valentinus Rose refers to it (Aristoteles qui ferebantur librorum fragmenta, collegit Valentinus Rose, Lipsiae 1886, s. 437). The fragment has been formerly ascribed to Ammonius. Busse, however, ascribes it to Olympiodor (Praefatio). There in Olympiodor discusses the question whether, according to the ancient philosophers, logic was part of philosophy, or its tool? Olym- piodor’s answers is, that there were some (the stoics) who have held it to be part of philosophy, while others (the peripatetic school) have thought it to be philosophy’s instrument (organon). Plato, on the other hand, has held it to be both part and instrument of philosophy.

Fregego logika zdań
Frege’s Logic of Propositions

In this study an attempt is made systematically to present Frege’s logic of propositions, special attention being given to the methodological side. For, uncontestably, the propositional logic is one of the most important contributions to the original achievement of the greatest of XIX century logicians.First, an analysis of Frege’s notion of a proposition, implyins the distinction of sense (Sinn) and denotation (Bedeutung), is given together with a resume of the whole ensuing discussion touching upon these functions of a proposition. With the division of propositions Frege’s contribution to the shaping of the notion of propositional functions, of variables and quantifiers, is presented. Then, after explanation of Frege’s symbolism, inter- propositional relations are discussed, and, in connection with these, truth- functors and their relation to the corresponding functors of every-day speech.Frege has construed his system of the logic of propositions axiomati cally, and in a spirit thoroughly modern he carefully distinguishes between the grades of language, just as he is modern in his conception of the uses of the theory of deduction, and in his distinction between premisses and rules in deduction). The system of propositional logic is an absolute one (it does not imply any other system), and construed by the method of syntax. In succession, the several elemnts of the deduction system of the logic of propositions are discussed (with particular attention to the role of definition in a deduction, system). Finally, there is a consideration of the problems of consistency, completeness and indépendance.

Sylogistyka u Apulejusza
The Syllogistic of Apuleius

The third part of the Apuleius, philosophical treatise De dogmate Platonis is a logical work, the Greek title of which : IIEPIHPMENEIAE is drawn from Aristotle. The chief part of this work treats on the syllogistics. Apuleius names not only the chief fourteen syllogisms of the three Aristotelic figurae, but also the five supplemantary syllogisms which are derived by Theophrastus. The singularity of the Apuleius’ syllogistics is the converse order of the premises of the syllogisms. Apuleius however, makes clear that the order of the permises is in fact completely indifferent. This rule leads Apuleius to certain inconsistencies.Apuleius presents superficially the proofs of the Syllogismus by the reduction to the chief syllogisms of the first figura and analyses exactly the proof by the reduction to contradiction (per impossibile). The content of the last chapter of Apuleius’ book is especially interesting. Apuleius takes there into account all possibile combinations of two propositions and eliminates the non-concluding combinations. Wo find here also the germs of the so-called rules of the syllogisms. Apuleius applies explicitly the rule of two negative premises and the rule of two particular premises. This book of Apuleius is of a certain importance as a source for the history of logic.

Aksjomaty nauk apriorycznych według Bernarda Bolzana
The Axioms of Deductive Sciences by Bolzano

| cited by
For Bolzano, who was, first of all, a mathematician, the existence of the mathematics as a true science was indubitable. Bolzano, however, did not agree with Kant’s explanation, as to how the mathematics are possible. Since the mathematics are a deductive science, therefore the question of the truth of their statements is reducible to the question of the truth of their axioms.Bolzano takes into consideration only propositions, which may be called objectiv and are certain objects ideal. As soon as Bolzano introduced the concept of objects of that kind, he initiated a certain platonismus non metaphysical.Bolzano asserts that:1) The existence of fundamental propositions that is of axioms in the mathematics is a fact.2) The axiom can be only such a proposition (objectiv), the subject and the predicat of which are simple concepts. In such a case the prédicat cannot be a component of the subject’s concept. The proposition, the subject and the predicat of which are simple concepts, cannot be analytic, but tnust be synthetic. Axioms must, therefore, be synthetic propositions. But since the axioms of mathematics (and of other deductive sciences) cannot be propositions a posteriori, they must, therefore, be propositions a priori. Consequently the axioms of the mathematics must be propositions synthetic a priori.3) The universality and the necessity of propositions synthetic a priori (and, therefore, of the axioms of the mathematics also) is not based in a form of pure intuition (Anschauung) — as Kant believed — but in the concepts only. Bolzano tries to explain and to demonstrate, how the reason of the universality and of the necessity of the propositions synthetic a priori can be involved in the concepts. But he makes it in a way which is not convincing and not satisfying. From the above mentioned premisses Bolzano tries to demonstrate the possibility of the metaphysics: Fundamental premisses of the metaphysics must be propositions synthetic a priori. The reason of the universality and of the necessity of the fundamental premisses of the metaphysics is involved in the concepts. Therefore, the metaphysics are — as Bolzano believs — a true science.

Interpretacja prawa a logika zdań normatywnych
Interpretation du Droit et Logique des Propositions Normatives
view |

| cited by
Argumentum a fortiori (a. a maiori ad minus, a. a minori ad maius), argumentum a simili ad simile, argumentum a contrario en font partie.

The Origin of Mathematical Induction

It is commonly thought that the first to have made definite and purposive use of the principle of arithmetic induction was the Italian Francesco Maurolico (1494—1575). Historians of mathematics of proofs where this principle may possibly have been made use of Euclides, John Cam- panus (XIIIe), Levi ben Gerson (XIVe.).The author’s investigations and research ave led him to accept the following conclusions:(1) Maurolico’s method of proofs which has been interpreted as an application of the principle of mathematical induction, is both a continuation of the scholastic tradition, and of that of the earles arithmeticians. In this respect, he is the immediate succesor of Jordan Nemorarius (d. 1237) and of his commentator Jacob Faber Stapulensis (d. 1537) and undirectly — of Boethius, Nicomachus of Geraza, Theon of Smyrna and Euclides.(2) Essentially, the use made by Maurolico of Mathematical induction, is not any clearer in his work than in that of Jordan (ed. and trad. Fabre), not even in that of Theon of Smyrna.(3) It would seem that the relevant proofs of Maurolico and his predecessors are based not on mathematic but on empiric induction.
