Language and its Creative Aspects

After introductory pointing to the character of the contemporary linguistics and language as welt as their philosophical implications, the paper is devoted to a philosophical of the problem of linguistic creativity. As N. Chomsky remarked, the very use of language postulates the existence of the creative „linguistic competence” in the man. Human use of language is based on peculiarly human cognition. Although animals are gifted with real cognition manifesting itself in natural life reactions as well as in the use of natural symbols (sounds, movements, „dances”), the man’s cognition and the use of human language as a conventional and superior set of signs connected with the cognition, prove that there exists a creative power in him. It was traditionally called reason, intellect, spirit. The characteristic features of this power are its freedom and openness; whereas its creativity consists in its continuous selfdetermination and choice of 1) the aspect of cognition of the very reality, since reality does not wholly determine our approach to the information about it; 2) changes of cognition aspects of the essence of things, since our cognition is selective and apprehensive and not comprehensive; 3) the amount of information (all or only part of) given to the interlocutor, since communicating with others by means of language does not force one to deliver all the information he has; 4) the way and context of language use in interhuman communication, the result being, that we never use our words twice in the literal and the same meaning; 5) concious training the use of language in order to improve our notions and cognitively approached information.Hence the, freedom and openness in approaching the contents of things, the freedom of will in •communicating those contents, the freedom and undetermination in the use of language signs constitute the continuous creativity of our language, which, being the instrumental sign of our formal signs (notions, formulated, senses), brings us into contact with aspectically the same designated thing.

Between Thought and Language

What is the connection between thought and language? This problem was first formulated by Plato, and then often recurred in philosophy, but only in 20th century it took a central position not only in pholoscphy, but also in the whole of humanities. To realize the contemporary knowledge about the connection existing between language and thought one must take into consideration at least three great currents of research: philosophical, linguistic, and psychological. In his article the author justifies not so much the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to the problem, as the need of philosophising which would take into consideration the indisputable achievements of linguistics and psycholinguistics. By means of several examples he shows how these achievements can enrich the subject-matter of philosophy. He also shows the way in which the seemingly technical use of the term „cogitatio” by Descartes and his followers — making light of the deep différenciation coded in the colloquial language — rendered any progress in this field impossible.

O pojęciu metafory
About the Notion of Metaphor
view |

| cited by
The present considerations aim at formulating the philosophical question about the nature of metaphor and at a certain proposal of an answer to this question. The extended denotation of the term "metaphor” often used in the literary and artistic criticism is ignored here. The narrow, initial notion of metaphor understood as a language phenomenon consisting in transferring terms from one branch of life, knowledge or art, to another is considered. Theres is an every day conviction that whenever we use the same words to describe e.g. physical and psychic states, we transfer the terms concerning-the former to the sphere of spiritual life. It seems that three types of situations and respectively three types of metaphors can be differentiated. The first group would compryse these metaphors, which do not raise serious doubts: everything seems to prove that when e.g. we say that someone "carries a burden of troubles”, we indeed transfer the notion of burden from the sphere of physical experiences to the sphere of spiritual ones. The second type of metaphor — connected e.g. with the notion of steering — raises more doubts as to the question, in which field the notion was originally created, and in relation to which sphere of life it was primarily used. The direction of "the pointer of transfer” is then uncertain. It is difficult to imagine a man who has never steered anything, but history knows epochs, in which people could not construct boats with a rudder. From the philosophical point of view the third type of metaphors is really interesting. These metaphors become so much suspected as their nature, that the question arises, if they still can be called by this term. The answer suggested here is negative and it is illustrated by two examples: light metaphors ("light of the sun”, "light of reason”, ”to see the tree”, ”to see the truth”, etc.), and metaphors consisting in wanderings of the same terms between ethics and aesthetics ("bad music”, "noble gas”, "good painting”, "beautiful deed”, etc.). An analysis done here leads to the hypothesis that actually the phenomenon of metaphor does not occur here. In many cases we adequately denote with the same word one and the only in its kind quality actualizing itself in two spheres of life, really present in two orders which in a part of their ranges are simply identical.

Odnowiona doktryna o wyobraźni i wyobrażeniu w perspektywach współczesnego tomizmu

Współczesne zainteresowania transcendentalną wyobraźnią i wyobrażeniem, badania nad archetypami, symbolami i mitami, wzbogacają wiedzę antropologiczną. Często prowadzą one jednak do skrajraego irracjonalizmu. J. Maritain, dostrzegając zarówno wartości tych badań, jak i związane z nimi niebezpieczeństwa, dokonał nowej interpretacji twórczości poetyckiej, w świetle kilku podstawowych tez filozofii tomistycznej. Intelekt czynny niekiedy naświetla swymi promieniami wyobrażenie, aby z niego wydobyć ukrytą inteligibilność i przygotować utworzenie pojęcia; pozostaje on wówczas na usługach rozumu logicznego.

Alienacja jednostki w stosunku do własnego „ja” i do własnego życia
Alienation of the Individual in Relation to his own „I” and to his own Life

Alienation of the individual in relation to his own ”I” can occur either when the man loses the feeling of identity with himself, approaching his own person as the object of observations and evaluations, which is outside his consciousness; or, when keeping the feeling of self-identity, he negatively evaluates his own activity and possibilities in relation to the personal pattern he has and aprroves of; or, when he treats his own gifts and behaviours as things-goods falling under the rules of economy of goods.Self-alienation occurs not in relation to the „human nature”, since it does not — in the author’s opinion — exist, but in relation to the „ideal model” of human personality, historically created and socially internalized. Looking for connections between self-alienation understood in this way and self-alienation in the sense of a loss of self-identity in connection with a mental disease» the author proclaims himself îclfavour of E. Fromm’s view, that every neurosis is a function of alienation. Finally an answer to the question, where alienation comes from, if it is not a plainly morbid phenomenon, is searched for. On the basis of E. Fromm’s and V. Frankl’s statements the second part of the article analysing the alienation of the individual in relation to his own life stresses, that the feeling of losing the sense of life, considered here mainly as the aim of human activity, and the feeling of existential void” causes this alienation. The author of the article states, that although Frankl’s logotherapeutic suggestions are effective with respect to individuals, they are found wanting, when similar social „illnesses” are concerned.

Dieu contre Dieu?

Philosophy as an Expressed Understanding of Reality

Philosophical publications from recent more than ten years allow the conclusion that all the conceptions of philosophy now existing in Poland and in the world are formulated within two initial standpoints: a) there is no difference between reality and cognition, b) there is a diffrerence between the structure of reality and the structure of cognition.By philosophy identifying reality and cognition we understand: 1) being in the world by using objects; 2) establishing relations between two fragments of physicalness; 3) creating the contents of products; 4) interiorization of the general structure in an individual.By philosophy discriminating reality from cognition in turn we understand: 5) the set of general notions; 6) the synthesis of results from various branches of culture; 7) reflection on cognition and the results of natural sciences; 8) analysis of language as the theory of signs, 9) analysis of language as a philosophical problem and the ways of solving it; 10) analysis of the language identical with the being; 11) analysis of the language of physics; 12) the set of adjacent problems; 13) expressed understanding of reality.By applying one of these philosophical conceptions one also organizes the philosophical exposition jn one of the five models of cultivating the philosophical problems: a) mathematical, introduced by Plato, .according to whom a philosophical proposition is justified if it results from a mathematical system of theorems, b) logical, introduced by Aristotle, who explained and justified philosophical propositions with logical erudition, and^especially with the theory of definition by kind, sort, difference and the theory of division of notions and propositions; c) relational, introduced by Plotinus and Proclus, explaining everything by showing the place of things between unity and multiplicity, infinity and finity, later fbetween spirit and matter, between alpha and omega, d) physical, introduced by Kant, who sees the basis of the scientific character of philosophical propositions in transferring notions and justifications from physics to philosophy, e) axiological, introduced by existentialism, structuralism, by thinking in terms of aims and not causes, according to which determining what is what consists in ascribing a value useful for US to a given thing.None of these models is methodologically right, since proving the propositions of a philosophy consists in transforming this philosophy into another branch of knowledge.Philosophy as an expressed understanding of reality verifies its propositions by establishing their consistence with reality on the basis of the criterion of unidentity of the existence and non-existence.

Ψεὒδος i ψευδἠς w filozofii Platona
Ψεὒδος et ψευδἠς selon Plato
view |

| cited by

W jaki sposób został on podjęty i naświetlony przez Grzegorza z Nyssy?

Postawa filozoficzna i religijna Ibn Sīnā w jej kontekście historycznym

Integracji tych tradycji próbował on dokonać na terenie „gnozy sapiencjalnej”.Problemy „mistyki” rozpatruje Ibn Sina w świetle własnej filozofii, w której wyjaśnia zagadnienie przeznaczenia człowieka. Ibn Sina przyznaje człowiekowi wprost nieograniczone możliwości poznawcze, ujmując go jako ostatnią emanację zstępującej hierarchii czystych duchów.

Augustyna
Master Eckhart and his Paris sermon for St. Augustine day
view |

| cited by
The manuscript of "sermo” preserved in the Erfurt Library "Amploniana” has aroused the medieavalists’ interest because of the designation in its colophon: "magister Echardus de Hochheim”. It points, according to Denifle and Koch, to the place of Eckhart’s birth, or, as Biereye and Hess, and lately also E. Albrecht think, to his patronymic, the contents of the sermon was subjected to historioliterary critique by B. Beyer. He found that the author for inexplicable reasons included excerpts from Klarenbald of Arras’s Commentary to Boethius’s De trinitate, that the sermon, unlike Quaestiones Parisienses discussed by Eckhart at the same time, is so unoriginal, "dass man [...] versucht sein könnte, an seiner Echtheit zu zweifeln”. In the light of these opinions two main questions can be seen: Why did Eckhart preach a sermon like this, and has it any connections with his Quaestiones Parisienses? In the sermo the master presented and compared two kinds of cognition of God: "per speculum et in aenigmate” and „per speculum et in lumine”. The first one appears in three forms, namely, in negation, extracting and causality. Boethius and Dionysius were in favour of negation, Augustine — extracting, and Aristotle was for causality. The real climax of Augustine’s "theologizare” is found in the other of the two kinds. It is also done in three ways: prophetic, ethical-gracial and ecstatic. This kind of cognition presumes absolution of mind by virtues and faith and tends to ecstasy. By this sharp différenciation Eckhart explained to the augustinists who arrived at the ceremony, that the misunderstandings between him and them have their , main source in those two kinds of theologizing. His „theologizare” is a continuation of Boethius’s, Dionysius’s, Aristotle’s and Chartres’s "theologizare”. But they attack him in the name of Augustine’s "theologizare”, which was conditioned by faith, virtue and grace. It was then a completely personal, presented, aiming at ecstasy and quite unique cognition of God. Referring to Augustine in the argument with the theologian-metaphysician is not only unjustified, but also is in fact an abuse of the saint’s authority. Augustine was someone very close for Eckhart. This is why the dialogue-polemics side of his sermon was stressed very discreetly. It only appears in the very choice of the subject ans subtle distribution of the accents.

Jan Gerson w swoim wystąpieniu (1402 r.) skrytykował całą szkolę „formalizantes” za to, iż do swego nauczania o prostej istocie Boga wprowadziła szereg rozróżnień a parte Dei.

Some Remarks on Late Medieaval Nominalism

The aim of the article is to list in three items the remarks which arose during readings on late medieaval nominalism. The first item is about the differences between Ockham's position and the position of his followers, mainly Buridan; in 15th century nominalism has already the shape of first of all Buridanism. The second item is concerned with the sources and connections of Ockhamism. It can be assumed that one of the sources is a reaction to such accents and attitudes in metaphysics, which have their source in Platonism. Nevertheless the fact that in late Middle Ages nominalism and Augustinism join into ecclectical currents points to deep connections of the metaphysics of nominalism with Platonism. The third item is about various views of the consequences of the discussed trend. Most authors write about the destructive power of Ockham’s and his followers’ doctrine. Professor Stefan Swieźawski points to the positive influence of this trend. He thinks that this influence consists not only in giving the foundations to the development of logics and natural sciences, but also in bringing a positive element to metaphysics itself.

Out of the thirteen commentaries to John of Holywood’s Treatise about the Sphere, which are found in the following manuscripts from the Bavarian State Library dm: 488, 4382, 3640, 9801, 12257, 14687, 17621, 19850, 24809, eleven have been considered here. They were written in the period of ca 1271 — ca 1450. The problem of the movement of the Earth was treated briefly. Attention should be paid to the fact that the author of the commentary written in 1381 (elm 5640) reminded the ancient scholars’ view about the movement of the Earth round the Sun. In the anonymous commentary written at the end of 14 th century (elm 488) and the analogous work from the middle of 15 th century (elm 24809) we find remarks about daily revolutions of the Earth round its, axis. The authors of these commentaries, who came probably from the German areas of Middle Europe gave rational arguments for and against the movement of the Earth, which was not meaningles in the slow process of forming the heliocentric vision. These authors, similarly to two Vienna commentators of the Treatise about the Sphere (elm 12257 and 19850) remained under the influencę of John Buridan, Nicholas Oresm and Albert Rickmersdorf of Saxony.

In the present article some contributions to the activities, mainly economical, of Wojciech of Brudzew, an outstanding astronomer and the teacher of Nicolaus Copernicus, have been collected and edited. They prove that in Collegium Majus of the Cracow University, to which he was appointed in 1483 from the group of minor fellows, performing the duties of viceprovost and attorney, he collected rents, raised and distributed funds.Wojciech also acted in Cracow townsmen’s affairs. In 1489 he and Andrzej of Łabiszyn took part in transacting a deal with an organ-builder, Cracow mansion-owner, Jan Niedziela, who was to buid an organ in the Marian church.Dying in 1495 he left some money to the University. They were disposed by the executors of his testament, magisters Marcin of Cracow, Mikołaj of Pilica, and Stanisław of Brudzew. The church of St. Florian in Kleparz possessed (at least until 1639) two silver sticks, the dean’s sceptres from his foundation.
