Arystotelesowo-tomistyczna koncepcja formy substancjalnej

Maritainowe proby wyodrębnienia filozofii przyrody od metafizyki i nauk przyrodniczych

Osiągnięcia duchowieństwa polskiego w zakresie nauk matematycznych i przyrodniczych

A Theory Of The Rockwastes Of The Święty Krzyż Mountains

The paper presented by the author is the first complete theory of the rockwastes of the Święty Krzyż Mountains. The system of alternate strata of quartzite and slate (Fig. 1) creates different conditions for the occurrence of rockwastes on the northern and southern sides of the chain. The northern rockwastes are more typical and numerous (Fig. 2). It is possible to distinguish three phases in the genesis of a rockwaste:1. The weathering phase: weathering has so far been considered the principal cause of rockwastes, especially in a perigiacial climate. However, it is very difficult to determine the extent of the northern glacier. Erratics are found on Święty Krzyż Mountain to a height of 570 m. above sea-level, and on Łysica to a height of 350 m. The author found that erratics were moved in connection with the spread of ancient iron smelting (Fig. 3). It is not impossible that the main glacier following the Vistula valley had a side branch, which from the east moved along the northern slope of the Łysogóra chain. Judging one state of weathering by the rounding of angles and edges may be deceptive, as in the Łysogóra chain spherical forms are found of sedimentary origin (Cambrian) riin large quartzite blocks (Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7). The author also reviews the quartzite material dates as being 180, 550, 1300, 2000, and 10000 years old. The dated material proves that the Cambrian quartzites of these mountains are very resistant to weathering.2. The tectonic phase: The author's investigations show that the degree of weathering is proportionate to the joints of the quartzite layers. The tectonic predispositions are the deciding factor in the disintegration of the quartzite. The zonal distribution of rock fragments according to size, and the disposition of the residual rocks, proves this in the whole Łysogóra range. The supposed dislocation system of right angles to the axis of the mountain chain is shown in fig. 8. Almost every one of the quartzite layers is to be found in different mechanical conditions. This can be seen in a rock ca. 10 m. long on Święty Krzyż Mountain (Fig. 9). The joint occuring here is frequently unusually small (fig. 10 = fragment B of the preceding fig.). The finding by the author of the first „marked" layer, in the form of quartzite with numerous concretions, confirmed the predisposition of the tectonic factors for disintegration (Fig. 11).3. The dynamic phase: has two stages: the congelifluctuatial movement in a periglacial climate and the present landslip movement. The author gives an original method of calculating the tempo landslip movements. Rockwastes at present extend over some places of ancient iron sfelting from the Halstead period time of Roman influence, and early Middle Ages. If the age of the smelting site is known, and the distance over which the rockwaste has moved, it is possible to calculate the tempo of the landslip movements. The sequences of the phases in the genesis of the Święty Krzyż rockwastes is as follows: tectonic predispositions of Hercynian and partly Caledonian orogenesis, weathering, and the dynamic ph_ase. The problem now arises: did the Święty Krzyż Mountains occur as a result of overfold, ar by the pushing to the surface of a rigid layer of Cambrian deposits? We also find overturned strata (Fig. 12, 13).

Podstawowe założenia i wartości teorii abiogenezy
The Basic Assumptions and the Value of the Theory of Abiogenesis

The article is an attempt of logical analysis of the theories of the origin of life. The author, accepting the definition of the theory of abiogenesis as a process of a slow, spontaneous and direct formation of living things from organic non-living compounds or directly from unorganic substances, presents three assumptions that occur in each theory of the origin of life.1. The existence of the causality including physical and dynamic interrelation of events; this assumption contains two possibilities; the original formation of organic compounds and further evolution of these compounds.2. The existence of the abiotic period in the history of earth.3. Primitive living things were similar to the actually existing organisms. As to the value of abiogenesis the author emphasises verification and above all tendency to the empiric sensity of notions of the theory. The tendency in the explanation of the origin of life, non implicating any metaphysical solutions, is the only legal one within the scope of accepted empirical methods.

Ilość a matematyka
Quantity and Mathematics

Contemporary mathematics experiences an extraordinary development. Entirely new branches of mathematics come to existence. Some of them consist in generalisation and homogenous expression of various parts of mathematics known before (e. g. homological algebra), other are wholly new sciences (e. g. information theory, the so-called operation study, and others). The fact calls for a wider view of the subject of study in modern mathematics than it is currently done in philosophical literature. One can usually meet there formulations proclaiming that the object of mathematical study is contained in the philosophical quantity category. The article summarized here endeavours to show that such an idea does not seem to cover the reality of contemporary mathematics. The argument is based on the quotation of several mathematical concepts having a nonquantitative character (yet fundamental in Mathematics, to-day), and of Jordan and Antoine's statements, also explicitly non-quantitative. More generally, it may be concluded that the study of non-categorical systems, i. e. possessing non-isomorphic models characteristic of contemporary mathematics, proves undoubtedly that the latter extends beyond the philosophical quantity category.

Zastosowanie zasady wzrostu entropii do niektorych modeli kosmologicznych
Application of the Increase of Entropy Principle to Certain Cosmological Models

Assuming the fact that science, at the present stage of its development, is not able to say anything concrete about the Universe, on the basis of the generalisation of the second thermodynamical principle, the authors of the article propose a new, in a way inverse, approach. From what modern cosmology states concerning the Universe taken as a whole, they endeavour to draw conclusions as to the applicability* of thermodynamic laws to it.. In other words, far from building a new „model" of the Universe by extrapolation of the increase of entropy principle, they try to assertain whether the theory of „thermic death" comes within the compass of ready models offered by cosmology.Thermodynamic principles can be safely applied to such systems only as have been, at least relatively, isolated, and the parameters of which, defining their state, are known. Hence it appears more reasonable not to start any study of „Universe thermodynamics" until after cosmological of the Universe have been apprehended as kind of system, i. e., within the framework of a concrete model.Such a method has been exemplarily applied to some relativistic models and to the steady state model of the Universe. It seems that, in relativistic cosmology, since the evaluation of the four-vector momentum for the ęntire space of a finished model results in the banal identity 0 : 0, the question of the maximal entropy characteristic of the „thermic death", is devoid of any physical sense. The excellent cosmological principle, assumed by the steady state model, prescribes to extend the lack of thermic equilibrium, observed in our immediate astronomic vicinity, to all cosmic spaces and to arbitrary periods, past or future. Thus, according to the steady state model, the „thermic death" will never happen.Modern cosmology knows observation tests permitting to envision a possible determination of which of the various models of the Universe corresponds the most to reality. That is why, to link the question of „thermic death" with a cosmological model is not only more correct from the point of view of thermodynamics itself, but appears also as a step forwards in a discussion that has been kept so far at a deadlock.
