The philosophers in this volume of The Proceedings of the Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy, though differing with respect to analysis and prescription, agree generally that philosophy has an important public role in contemporary discussions regarding globalization and its effects. Two broad consequences of globalization can be discerned for philosophy. The first is that intercultural philosophy (as opposed to, say, “analytic” philosophy or “Asian” philosophy) is uniquely positioned to shed new light on perennial philosophical problems. Second, globalization itself presents new problems for philosophy to address, especially in the areas of social and political philosophy.
