Czy wartość życia wzrasta wobec bliskiej śmierci?
Does the Value of Life Increase Near Its End?

The costs of life-extending care at the end of life are often disproportionately high in relation to the benefits it brings to the patients. Thus, the unrestricted principle of cost-effectiveness as a rule of rational healthcare allocation would require us to limit publicly funded life-prolonging treatments for patients nearing the end of life. From a societal perspective, however, this limitation would be often callous and inhuman. There are three possible ways to reconcile these two attitudes. First, we could restrict the principle of cost-effectiveness by questioning its validity in the field of end- of-life care. Second, we could raise the acceptable upper cost-effectiveness threshold for end-of- life treatments. Thirdly, it is also possible to maintain that the seemingly rather poor effects of end-of-life treatments are actually much better, because the value of life increases as death draws near. In this paper, I discuss the plausiblity of this last solution.

Tomasz z Akwinu i Duns Szkot o przygodności, wolności i indywidualności
Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus on Contingency, Freedom and Individuation
abstract |

Duns Szkot interpretuje wolę, przeciwstawiając ją naturze, i rozumie prawdziwie osobowe, wolne i chrześcijańskie działanie w opozycji do deterministycznych działań natury. De veritate, q. 6, a. 3, ad 3).
The paper attempts to present the fundamental perspectives which are necessary to understand Aquinas’s position on contingency, freedom and individuation in order to compare his thinking with Duns Scotus’s. The author wants to take into account Gilson’s warning: it is useless to compare chosen details of the aforementioned philosophical proposals, if there is no understanding of the deep difference between the metaphysical systems of the two philosophers. The first section presents the difference in the understanding of the relationship between nature and will. Duns Scotus interprets the will as opposed to nature and sees a truly free and Christian person acting as opposed to the deterministic operations of nature. For Aquinas the truly personal acting may be inscribed in nature as its free fulfilment. The difference is based on the different readings of Aristotle’s philosophy. The second section describes the difference in the understanding of the transcendence of the divine actions. Thomas uses a very strong concept of transcendence that allows him to accept the thesis that God’s immutable (= necessary) will achieves its purposes through the necessary and free (sic!) actions of the creatures (cf. De veri- tate, q. 6, a. 3, ad 3). Duns Scotus looks for a more intuitive understanding of the relationship between divine and human acting. Because of that he describes the divine actions as contingent, undertaken in the eternal “now”. The third section deals with the doctrine of individuation. Duns Scotus’s proposed solution to this problem is his famous form haecceitas. Although the form as the source of substantiality is the sign of individuality for Thomas, as well, in his case this has been achieved through individuation, and although he must have been aware of some difficulties in the classical Aristotelian position (matter as the main factor in individuation), he sticks to the Aristotelian solution, only slightly reformulating it (materia quantitate signata). There are two reasons for his fidelity to Aristotle in spite of doubts expressed by Albert the Great and Bona- venture: the stress on the hylemorphic structure of being and the attempt to articulate the consistency of the conceptual genera. The last problem leads to the main metaphysical difference of the analysed proposals. Duns Scotus as an essentialist has to inscribe everything that is real within the order of essence; Thomas articulates reality by taking into account essence and existence. His position opens wider possibilities for the understanding of being.

Kontyngencja, wolność, indywidualność — Jan Duns Szkot a tradycja arystotelesowska
Contingency, Free Will and Individuality: John Duns Scotus and the Aristotelian Tradition

The aim of the paper is to show the main differences between the concepts of contingency, free will and individuality in John Duns Scotus and in the Aristotelian tradition. I outline the parts of Scotus’s view, which constitute a clear departure from the traditional Aristotelian outlook: (a) the rejection of the principle of plenitude; (b) the construal of the present as contingent; (c) the development of the notion of synchronic contingency; and (d) the separation between immutability and necessity. In his anthropology Scotus emphasizes: (1) the notion of free will as autonomous and self-determining; (2) the rationality of the will, which consists in its dependence on the intellect or knowledge; and (3) the rejection of Aristotelian eudaimonism. God is treated by Scotus as capable of knowing and loving individual, contingent beings. In his axiology Scotus stresses positive aspects of the individuality, plurality and uniqueness of each individual being.

Trudności analizy faktu istnienia
Troubles with an Analysis of Facts of Existence
abstract |

In the article, I examine whether an analysis of facts of existence is possible. A fact of existence is a specific variety of a state of affairs. States of affairs are ontological correlates of propositions. Facts of existence are counterparts of existential propositions. States of affairs, in contrast to facts of existence, can be analyzed as compositions of simpler ingredients, e.g. of subject and properties. There are philosophers who think the analogical analysis is possible in the case of facts of existence. According to such an analysis, facts of existence consist in having an existence but conceived as an inseparable inner principle called an act of existence or esse. I argue against the possibility of such an analysis. If we consequently analyze a fact of existence in terms of alleged ingredients, we are finally obliged to accept the thesis that esse is entirely external to the thing. I also show that inseparability of esse blocks the function ascribed to it: the function of making real. I maintain facts of existence are non-analyzable and I refute the validity of the real difference between essence and esse.

Jeszcze o istnieniu — próba rekapitulacji
On Existence Again. An Attempt at a Recapitulation

In the paper, I put forward my views on the topic of existence. I do it by focusing on three distinctions: between static conceptions of existence and dynamic ones; between existence (of something) as a fact and as a principle of being; and between the limited existence of contingent beings and the Divine existence itself. I try to defend the cognitive value of the second parts of these distinctions in ontological and theological contexts. In my opinion, existence as a dynamic factor of being makes the difference between real and intentional objects, as well as between real (actual) and potential states of the world. Existence is also a necessary condition of proper activities of beings. In the final parts of the article I discuss some objections stated by Marek Piwowarczyk in his essay “Troubles with an Analysis of Facts of Existence.” I maintain that most of these (or similar) difficulties can be resolved by means of tools present in Barry Miller’s conception of existence.

The subject of the paper is the ontological status of actual and non-actual worlds. According to one version of contemporary Meinongianism, while the actual world exists, merely possible and impossible worlds are nonexistent objects. Moreover, they do not have any other form of being. The aim of the paper is to indicate some problematic consequences of this kind of Meinongianism, and to sketch an alternative view, which is based on ontological pluralism—the view according to which there are many kinds of being.

Wolna wola i idea Sądu Ostatecznego
Free Will and the Idea of the Last Judgement

In his article, the author seeks to demonstrate that if there is a free will that results in good or evil, there must also be a Last Judgment, as there must be a proper settlement of the good or evil done. The existence of free will, which can produce good and evil, would be completely anomalous and pointless if there were no Last Judgment, and there are no pointless things in the world as we see it. The converse is also justified: if in the history of human cultures—in the history of religious systems since ancient times, at least from ancient Egypt—there is a belief in a court to which dying persons are subject, such a judgment only makes sense when people have free will to do good or evil. Thus, the idea of the Last Judgment supports the belief that free will exists.

First, the article discusses the British writer, Ian McEwan, from the standpoint of his atheism. It does so through the prism of “double-track” world views which characterize some of his works (Black Dogs and Enduring Love). In the second part, the essay moves on to address the moral problem of his penultimate novel, Children Act, and discusses the dilemma present here on three levels: religious, legal, and existential. The last one seems to be crucial to determining the tragic nature of the characters’ situation.

The present paper deals with the crucial element of Leo Tolstoy’s philosophy of religion, namely his conception of religion, A survey of his philosophical works shows that he presented partially different definitions: according to the first, religion is a general practical relationship of an individual to the world, and according to the second, it is a concrete attitude towards the world, namely one in which an individual goes beyond boundaries of her individual and communal identity, and tries to harmonize her life with the life of the whole world, The paper presents a reconstruction and analysis of both definitions, showing that they are versions of a broader, practicist conception of religion, and confronts Leo Tolstoy’s evolution with the philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard,

Michel Houellebecq — ostatni egzystencjalista?
Michel Houellebecq — the Last Existentialist?
abstract |

| cited by
The French writer Michel Houellebecq is the author of six novels, and is also a poet, a director, and a musician. His literature is usually thought to be a fierce critique of contemporary society, especially of phenomena like consumerism and the sexualization of culture. In this article, I shall argue that Houellebecq’s novels share a thought that is also the basic idea of existentialism. Quoting not only Houellebecq’s novels, but also poems, essays and interviews, I will try to show that the problem he considers—which I call “the existence problem”—concerns the relation between a subjective individual and objective reality, described in terms of the natural sciences. By contrast, the main characters of his novels are representatives of different answers to that problem. If the problem does play a crucial role in existentialism—and, as I argue, this is the case—then it is legitimate to call Houellebecq probably the last of the influential existentialists.

Debata Dummett-Lash i bezpośredniość Obj awienia
The Dummett-Lash Debate and Unmediated Revelation

W artykule streszczam tzw.
In the article, I summarize the so-called “Dummett - Lash debate” that took place in the pages of the English Catholic journal New Blackfriars in the years 1987-1989. I discern three main streams of the debate. In the first, the main opponent of philosopher Michael Dummett, the initiator of the debate, was Benedectine Bede Griffith, who proposed a symbolic way of understanding the Bible. Dummett responded that any symbolic understanding depends on a previous literal understanding, which therefore cannot be rejected. In the second stream, Dummett argued that we need intersubjective justification of our belonging to a particular Church, because otherwise we could not give any reasons why those who don’t profess Christianity should change their views. His main point wasn’t challenged, but some participants of the debate questioned some details of the nature of this justification and entire paradigm of thinking in confessional terms. The third and focal point of the debate was Dummett’s insistence that contemporary Catholic biblical studies depart from traditional Catholic teaching and therefore it is necessary to pronounce the limits of admissible reinterpretation of the articles of Catholic faith. Many theologians who took part in the debate saw this as a threat to academic freedom, and the most important of them, University of Cambridge Professor Nicholas Lash, pointed out that Dummett’s pronouncement also needs interpretation, since otherwise establishing the limits of possible reinterpretation would be simply impossible. In the end of the article, I come to the conclusion that we can see Dummett both as a philosopher who tries to treat religion rationally and as a simple Catholic layman who wants to have direct access to revelation without the mediation of biblical experts.

Jak dwoje staje się jednym? Pojęcie tożsamości u Pawła Florenskiego
How Two Become One? Pavel Florensky’s Concept of Identity

Pavel Florensky attempted to formulate an ontological theory of love. He believed that love is not merely a psychological phenomenon but also implies a kind of real unification. Florensky proposed to understand the latter in terms of consubstantiality. Two numerically distinct subjects might become one in virtue of their numerically identical essence. Besides that Florensky sketched an ontological theory based on the distinction between things and persons. It seems that he held a bundle theory of objects, a trope nominalism for things, and a substrate theory combined with realism for persons. Florensky’s view might be therefore taken as a position in the debate on the principle of the identity of indiscernibles. Finally, I suggest that the serious philosophical and theological problems of Florensky’s ontology of love might be overcome by adding to his theory the patristic distinction between essence and energies.

Krytyka pewnej postaci współczesnego deizmu jako projektu nowej religii w zglobalizowanym świecie:
Na marginesie książki Roberta Corfe’a Deism and Social Ethics
Criticism of a Certain Form of Contemporary Deism as a New Religion Project in a Globalized World

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest krytyczna prezentacja głównych tez pewnej wersji współczesnego deizmu, zaproponowanej przez Roberta Corfe’a, autora książki Deism and Social Ethics: The Role of Religion in the Third Millennium.
In his essay entitled Deism and Social Ethics: The Role of Religion in the Third Millennium, Robert Corfe presents a contemporary version of deism. His concept is not a simple continuation of eighteenth-century English deism, but is a considerably modified theory, taking into account modern achievements of the natural sciences. The author believes that the main threat to world peace comes from conflicts between followers of the largest monotheistic religions like Islam and Christianity. A main task of contemporary deism would be the construction of agreement among the large religious communities in the world by means of continuous rational persuasion. Above all, the proposed deism would be a global ethics, related to an impersonal cosmic Deity (the Good). Simultaneously, it would break with all supernatural religions (theologies) based on different revelations. These latter are the source of irrationalism according to Corfe. It would be much better to replace them with a suprahuman rationalism discovered in Nature and deriving from Divine Reason immanently existing in the Universe. Corfe’s deism would be an alternative to atheism, popularized among educated men in Western countries. Also his deism is addressed to all people, who are making now political and economic decisions in a globalized world. As such, his deism can be a great worldwide ideology, especially useful for those who have an influence on the fate of the contemporary world. In this article are presented the main features of the above-mentioned version of deism, as well as a critical assessment of this type of deism, including a discussion of hidden and controversial presuppositions. It is found that this version of deism is not as persuasive and rational as its author thinks.

Sekularyzm polityczny a spór o przekonania sumienia
Political Secularism and the Debate about the Status of Conscientious Convictions

W artykule rekonstruuję podstawowe elementy koncepcji „sekularyzmu otwartego” przedstawionej przez Jocelyna Maclure’a i Charlesa Taylora w książce Secularism and Freedom of Conscience (2011).
In the paper, the basic elements of the conception of “open secularism” presented by J. Mac- lure and Ch. Taylor in their book Secularism and Freedom of Conscience (2011) are described. I point out that one of the defining feature of Maclure’s and Taylor’s theory of political secularism consists in supporting the “accommodation measures” which aim at protecting the freedom of conscience. In the next part of the article the main standpoints of the debate concerning the status of conscientious convictions are characterized and the “subjective” account of the freedom of conscience put forward by Maclure and Taylor is presented. In the following part of the paper Cecile Laborde’s critique of the subjective freedom of religion and Maclure’s reply is summarized. In the last part of the paper I try to show that the presentation of the subjective account of conscientious convictions in Secularism and Freedom of Conscience cannot be reconciled with Taylor’s conception of“strong evaluations”.

Filozofiajako dyscyplina humanistyczna
Philosophyas a Humanistic Discipline
abstract |

Jest on swoistym testamentem filozoficznym autora Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy, w którym przedstawia swoją wizję filozofiijako dziedziny humanistycznej.
This text was delivered by Williams as a lecture to The Royal Institute of Philosophy on 23 February 2000, three years before Williams' passing. It can be understood as a philosophical testament of the author of Ethics and The Limits of Philosophy, in which he presents his vision of philosophy as a humanistic discipline. According to Williams there are serious reasons supporting the rejection of extreme metaphilosophical positions such as scientism, relativism or pragmatism. Advocates of those standpoints misconceive the essential differences between philosophy and science, and as a consequence they are unable to formulate an outlook that would allow us to acquire a meaningful understanding of ourselves and of our various intellectual and practical activities. The basic mistake here is to ignore the fact that science has a theory of error, which allows us to interpret its historical development as a process motivated by epistemic reasons, while philosophical concepts also undergo various non-epistemic determinations, especially determination by history and culture. Williams does not think that it is a sufficient reason to reject philosophy. Science may be superior to philosophy in cognitive aspects; however, it is unable to provide us with a rich self-understanding, a task that can and should be the aim of philosophy, if only we abandon attempts to liken it to science and focus on the most important facts about human beings—mainly, that we are not purely rational intelligences, but flesh-and-blood beings shaped by our biology, psychology, history and culture, beings that have many complex needs that can't be reduced to purely cognitive ones.

Jefte w tarapatach: Moralne dylematy a teizm
Jephthah’s Plight: Moral Dilemmas and Theism
abstract |

Natomiast w odniesieniu do pierwszej opcji artykuł zamykają uwagi dotyczące sposobu opracowania normatywnej teorii etycznej o charakterze teistycznym, która uznaje istnienie dylematów moralnych. Teiści zainteresowani taką teorią powinni poważnie rozważyć odrzucenie założenia, że powinność implikuje możliwość.
This essay examines the phenomenon of moral dilemmas from a theistic perspective. Many theists have supposed either (1) that a providential God would never confront a creature with a choice in which the creature cannot avoid doing wrong, or (2) that if a creature does confront such a choice situation, it is the result of some prior wrongdoing freely committed by that creature. This second alternative has been ascribed by many to St. Thomas Aquinas. I argue that the ascription is unwarranted, citing among other cases Aquinas’s examination of Jephthah’s vow in the book of Judges. As for the first alternative, the essay concludes with some observations about how one might develop a theistic normative ethical theory, consistent with God’s providence, that recognizes moral dilemmas. One of the assumptions that theists should seriously consider abandoning in the process is the principle that ought implies can.

Does Aristotle’s Akratēs Not Choose and If Not, Why Not?
abstract |

G.E.M. Anscombe put her finger on an inconsistency in Aristotle’s Nicomachean ethics: Aristotle seems to claim that whatever results from deliberation is the object of choice, and he admits that the akrates deliberates at times quite successfully, yet he denies that the akrates makes a choice. She provides a solution: A choice (she thinks Aristotle should have said) is not just whatever results from deliberation but only if the goal at which the deliberation aims was itself chosen, which she interprets as constituting object of the agent’s will (βούλησις [boulēsis]). I examine this Anscombian solution, point out its diverse shortcomings (infinite regress, the inscrutability of the lineage of choices, the unachievability of the primordial goal) and yet I attempt to improve upon it. To this aim I put up for consideration whether such (post-)primordial choices as Anscombe seems to require are not, after all, sometimes made, viz. in the light of one’s idea of living well, and if they are not at least in principle translatable into goals that we can reasonably hope to achieve.

Metateoria historii woli:
Rozważania o powstaniu i wczesnym rozwoju pojęcia woli od V wieku przed Chr. do Maksyma Wyznawcy
Metatheory of a History of Will
abstract |

Rozpatruję pojęcie wyboru Platona, pojęcia życzenia i wyboru Arystotelesa, pojęcie przyzwolenia stoików, teorię wolności Epikura, teorię wyboru Aleksandra z Afrodyzji, pojęcie woli Augustyna z Hippony i teorię woli Maksyma Wyznawcy.
In the text, I discuss the metatheoretical aspects of a history of the origins and development of the notion of free will. I begin with the notion of a speculative concept. Since the will is a speculative concept there is no unequivocal definition of this notion. For this reason the study of the history of this notion is particularly difficult, since ancient authors have operated on different theories of willing and freedom, which were not always mutually compatible. Next, I discuss the theories of willing and action of select authors, that had a significant influence on the later development of the theory of the will. I discuss the notion of choice in Plato, the notions of wish and choice in Aristotle, the notion of assent in the Stoics, the theory of freedom of Epicurus, the theory of choice of Alexander of Aphrodisias, the concept of will in Augustine of Hippo, and the theory of will in Maximus the Confessor.

Doctrinal Controversies of the Carolingian Renaissance:
Gottschalk of Orbais’ Teachings on Predestination
Kontrowersje Doktrynalne Renesansu Karolińskiego
abstract |

| cited by
The article attempts to characterize three key doctrinal controversies in the Carolingian Renaissance, namely: the disputes over the Eucharist, the so-called trina deitas, and predestination. The core of the article is an exposition of the controversy concerning predestination, whose main protagonist is Gottschalk of Orbais. The article discusses four crucial issues related to the problem: (i) the concept of God, (ii) the understanding of grace, nature and free will, (iii) the relation of foreknowledge to predestination, and (iv) the doctrine of redemption, i.e., specifically the relationship betweenjustice and mercy. The article is largely an attempt at an interpretation of the texts of the epoch, mainly those of Gottschalk of Orbais and his adversary, Hincmar of Reims. The conclusions point to difficulties in the issues discussed and outline what attempts at solving this problem have taken place in the coming centuries.
Artykuł podejmuje próbę scharakteryzowania trzech kluczowych kontrowersji doktrynalnych w epoce renesansu karolińskiego, mianowicie: sporu o Eucharystię, sporu o tzw. trina deitas oraz o predestynację. Trzon artykułu stanowi kontrowersja o predestynację, której głównym bohaterem był Gottschalk z Orbais. Artykuł referuje cztery węzłowe kwestie związane z tym problemem: (i) pojęcie Boga, (ii) rozumienie łaski, natury i wolnej woli, (iii) relacji przedwiedzy do predestynacji, (iv) nauki o Odkupieniu, tj. w szczególności stosunku sprawiedliwości do miłosierdzia.
