Descartes i problem nieśmiertelności duszy ludzkiej
Descartes and the Problem of Immortality of the Human Soul

Descartes argued, starting from his famous thesis “I think, therefore I am” which he thought to be the only unquestionable proposition, that he succeeded in proving that there are only two substances—material and spiritual—which are entirely distinct, separate, and autonomous in their actions. From the time he wrote his Meditations on First Philosophy he was deeply convinced that he was also able to prove the immortality of the human soul by virtue of the claim of its substantial distinctness. However, when writing his Meditations, and especially as a result of the discussions with his opponents he became convinced that on the ground of his philosophy such a proof was simply impossible. This article presents Descartes’ way of thinking, and the process of replacing the metaphysical point of view with the ethical point of view.

Watykański rękopis Etyki Spinozy
The Vatican Manuscript of Spinoza’s Ethica
abstract |

Artykuł dotyczy rękopisu Etyki Spinozy znalezionego w Watykańskiej Bibliotece Apostolskiej i opublikowanego przez L. Spruita i P. Totaro w książce The Vatican Manuscript of Spinoza’s Ethica (2011).
The article focuses on Spinoza’s manuscript found in The Vatican Apostolic Library and published by L. Spruit and P. Totaro in the book The Vatican Manuscript of Spinoza’s Ethica (2011). The identification of the text became possible as the result of their arduous research in which the name of a Danish scientist N. Stensen, the author of several letters usually published in the collections of Spinoza’s letters, played a crucial part. The manuscript Vat. Lat. 12 838 is the only known editorial copy of Spinoza’s manuscripts and its origins are dated as early as 1675, i.e. before the publication of Opera posthuma. The comparison of its contents with the Ethics, published in 1677, points to many differences, most of which are typical mistakes, occurring probably either in Spinoza’s manuscript, or in the editorial copy, or else made by the typesetter and not expunged during the editorial proofreading. However, the editors emphasize the importance of some substantive differences of the text for the interpretation of Spinoza’s Ethics. The history of the manuscript and the circumstance it found its way to the library of The Holy Office and thence to the Vatican Apostolic Library enabled the editors to put forward some hypotheses concerning the circulation of Spinoza’s manuscripts in the period when the censure was issued against him after the publication of the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus.

Problem „jakości ukrytych” w XVII-wiecznych dyskusjach nad istotą świata materialnego
The Issue of the “Occult Qualities” in the 17th-Century Discussions on the Nature of Material World
abstract |

Koniec XVI i początek XVII wieku to czas ożywionych dyskusji filozoficzno-przyrodniczych.
The end of 16th and the beginning of 17th centuries witnessed some very heated discussions on the philosophy of nature. One of the important issues was the nature of matter. There clashed there the tree dominating philosophical positions—the Aristotelian hylemorphism, the emerging modern atomism and, deriving from Paracelsus the chemical philosophy. Of many of the discussed topics a special attention deserves the issue of “occult qualities.” The accepted concept of them turns out to be a distinguishing feature of these philosophical positions. The concept of “occult qualities” is an important one because it shows some epistemological presuppositions that are taken by each of the sides. It is mainly about the relation between intelligibility and possibility of sensual perception of material objects, and the cognitive abilities of human mind. The accepted views are decisive as to how the very concept of “quality” is understood. For the Aristotelians it is a feature that really adheres to the object, the modern philosophers understand it as a relation between the subject and the object, the Paracelsians, finally, interpret the features of material object in a spiritual way.

John Locke’s Concept of Tolerance as a Reaction to the Principle “cuius regio, eius religio”
abstract |

W latach 1530-1689 spowodowało to państwowy terror, wrzenie społeczne i wyraźną deprecjację religii chrześcijańskiej.
As the aim of this article is to demonstrate and assess of argumentation value for the tolerance, we can find in The Letter on Tolerance, written by John Locke (1632–1704). His concept of tolerance was the answer to the political principle cuius regio, eius religio, for the first time verbally formulated in Germany (Augsburg, 1555), but much earlier applied in England during the reign of Henry VIII. Beyond all doubt Locke proved that religion subordination to the current politics was a fatal political error. In the 1530–1689 years it caused political terror, social turmoil and considerable depreciation of Christian religion. A king was a Supreme Governor of Church of England and in practise decided on dogmatic shape of official religion. Governments based on the principle cuius regio, eius religio were intolerant by definition towards “non stated-owned” confessional communities. Their religious beliefs were driven back to the illegal private life. Royal opponents were excluded from the public sphere, imprisoned and even executed. John Locke was the first European thinker, who thoroughly understood this extremely expensive political error, committed by the king Henry VIII and his successors, and by his writings provoked comprehensive discussions, which to a considerable degree led to the political, social and religious peace in England. As a primordial aim for John Locke was not to make a project of generally accepted religious tolerance. In spite of some sympathy to Socinian writers, English thinker had no irenistic inclinations, in order to participate in creation of inter-religious theological minimum, possible to accept by all sides. Locke, as a philosoph of politics responded to the needs of his times. The main problem was how to get England out from a state of permanent turmoil, bloody conflicts and continuous ideological discussions, bringing out growing religious and polical hate, and to lead to stable social peace. His concept of tolerance had first and foremost historical meaning and to some degree contributed to the development of European democracy.

Gilles Ménage i jego Historia mulierum philosopharum
Gilles Ménage and His Work Historia mulierum philosopharum

The article is devoted to French scholar Gilles Ménage (1613-1692) and his not extensive but impressive in its erudition work Historia mulierum philosopharum (1690). First of all, Ménage is known as the editor and the commentator of Diogenes Laertius, the author of esteemed works about language (for example: Dictionnaire étymologique ou origine de la langue françoise), and the poet writing in Greek, Latin, Italian and French. Historia mulierum philosopharum is the special work in his achievements. This writing was dedicated to Anne Dacier (1654-1720)—the famous French scholar and the translator of the classical authors. It presents biographies of women philosophers, some of them acclaimed, some others not as popular. The author concentrated on Greco-Roman antiquity, but he also wrote about the Byzantine era. The profiles of women philosophers are classified according to philosophical schools, beginning with those thinkers whose philosophical affiliation is unknown. The biographic entries have different sizes, but they follow the similar scheme: a name of a woman philosopher, her origin, the information about her life and achievements with erudite commentaries and acknowledgments. The number of sources is impressive. Plenty of works of the classical and contemporary to Ménage authors are cited. These many threads are broadly discussed in this article. First, the analysis of Ménage’s work Historia mulierum philosopharum shows the canon of available in the times of Ménage sources (of course on the condition that their user had some command of Greek and Latin). Second, it informs us how many classical texts were still published and commentated in the 17th century in the west of Europe as the continuation of the Italian humanists’ work. Third, it proves also that a presence of women in philosophy of the 17th century was, nonetheless, a peculiarity.

Rozwój medycyny a poziom świadomości zdrowotnej w XVII wieku
The Development of Medicine and the Level of Health Consciousness in the 17th Century
abstract |

The end of the 17th century is characterized by the existence of a marked discrepancy (or disproportion) between the growing level of medical knowledge, medical teaching and therapeutic methods on the one hand, and the state of knowledge concerning the relation between hygiene and health both on the level of individuals and the population on the other. The development of medicine as a science in connection with the development of biological sciences and clinical methods make it possible to understand the relation between hygiene, prevention and the state of health. This process became apparent in the 19th century, which is when the state of knowledge and the level of technical advancement made it possible to implement a number of pro-health solutions on the level of individuals and the whole society. It is in this context that this article discusses the precursory character of G.W. Leibniz’s postulates concerning the teaching of medicine and the organization of health service. It also demonstrates—based on the hygienic recommendations formulated by Jean-Baptiste de la Salle—that Leibniz’s postulates could not be fulfilled in 19th-century society.

Getting Straight on How Russell Underestimated Frege
abstract |

| cited by
Bertrand Russell in his essay On Denoting [1905] presented a theory of description developed in response to the one proposed by Gottlob Frege in his paper Über Sinn und Bedeutung [1892]. The aim of our work will be to show that Russell underestimated Frege three times over in presenting the latter’s work: in relation to the Gray’s Elegy argument, to the Ferdinand argument, and to puzzles discussed by Russell. First, we will discuss two claims of Russell’s which do not do justice to Frege: that we speak of a sense by means of quotation marks, and that all Frege does to cope with phrases that might denote nothing is define an arbitrary object as their reference. Second, we will show that Russell omitted the fact that Frege’s theory provided some answers for the puzzles presented by Russell in his essay.

Bóg i antyrealizm
God and Antirealism
abstract |

| cited by
Two kinds of connections between semantic antirealism and theism may be distinguished. The first one begins with the antirealist claim that we understand language through our knowledge of justification of statements or sentences. Consequently, it becomes impossible to transfer God’s knowledge to the believer, if she or he personally doesn’t know the justification of the relevant statements. There is especially strong exposition of this doctrine in the last pages of Michael Dummett’s The Logical Basis of Metaphysics. This could be understood as the refutation of any kind of illuminationism, as well as some remotely related positions, like transcendental idealism. The second connection is more positive for theism. Antirealism needs to suppose that every statement could be known, which seems to be contrary to common sense. But there is one very easy way to make this supposition true, namely by acknowledging the existence of omniscient God, who knows every proposition. This way of thinking was first expounded by Alvin Plantinga few decades ago, and since then has become the subject of scrupulous discussions by different philosophers. It should be emphasized that after close examination these two connections aren’t equally justified, because only the first one has strong semantic roots in antirealism, why the second one is merely a speculative conjecture.

Astrologia i Naturphilosophie:
casus Johanna Wilhelma Andreasa Pfaffa (1774-1835)
Astrology and Naturphilosophie
abstract |

Johann Wilhelm Andreas Pfaff (1774-1835) był obiecującym niemieckim matematykiem i astronomem, należącym do bogatej w tradycje akademickie rodziny Pfaffów – miał dwóch starszych powszechnie znanych braci.
Johann Wilhelm Andreas Pfaff (1774-1835) was a promising German mathematician and astronomer belonging to the rich in academic traditions family—he had two well-known older brothers. The present paper describes life of the youngest of Pfaffs since his theological studies in Göttingen to the time of his activity at the University of Erlangen. Following the footsteps of Claudius Ptolemy and J. Kepler, Johann Wilhelm Andreas Pfaff tried to promote astrology in the first decades of the 19th century. His efforts to strengthen astrology as a full-fledged academic discipline, instead of the expected effect, have resulted in opposition, mockery and his marginalisation in contemporary academic community. However, such personal drama of this scholar should be considered in a wider context of so-called Naturphilosophie—romantic intellectual movement, extremely popular in the contemporary intellectual circles of the German states (as well as in the Scandinavian countries).

„Równoczesność” a „teraźniejszość”:
fizyka i metafizyka czasu
“Simultaneousness” and “Nowness”
abstract |

| cited by
The status of “nowness” is one of the most important problems of the philosophy of time. The question of “the now” remains relevant in the discussion between presentism and eternalism, or in the problem of reconciliation between the classic idea of objective sense of the flow of time and the concept of time in the modern science. Philosophy of science also reveals the never-recognized-before problem of defining “simultaneousness.”The discussions on the objectivity or reality of the flow of time neither are the domain of the 20th-century philosophy, nor are the result of the discoveries in the modern physics. It was right on the grounds of relativistic physics, however, where the intuitive perception of time (including the supposedly obvious ideas of “simultaneousness” or the “coexistence”) and the philosophical implications of the scientific theory spectacularly collided. The dissonance between temporalintuitions and ontological implications of relativistic time was studied by Gödel, Rietdijk, and Putnam. The attempts to reconcile the classic tensal categories with the STR definitions, made by Sklar and the others, indicate the need of explication of the different presumptions of the two frameworks of conceptual schemas as well as the need of the separation between metaphysics and epistemology. A radical attempt of elimination of the conflict between the intuition of the flow oftime and the relativistic concept of time was presented by Prior, who assigned a fundamental meaning to the tensal categories (A-theory) and who considered the relativistic concepts to be conventional and secondary. Such an idea, however, would explicitly negate the ontological presumptions of the STR, formulated by Einstein himself. The article presents this difficulties on the basis of the fundamental presumptions and features of the classic and relativistic concept of time.

Tradycję tę charakteryzuje bowiem energetyzm, a Florenskiego esencjalizm. Te i inne punkty zostały omówione w prezentowanym tekście.
The paper is an attempt to present philosophical views of one of the currently most prominent Russian thinkers, Sergey Khoruzhy, through the prism of critique of Pavel Florensky’s thought. The latter—a genius and a martyr (as he is thought to be)—like most of the religious philosophers of the so-called Silver Age of Russian culture, seems to be far removed from the mainsteam of Orthodox spiritual tradition—hesychasm. The said tradition can be described as energetism whereas Florensky’s thought is best viewed as essentialism. Energetism, a quite enigmatic concept from the Western perspective, appears as fundamental concept of Khoruzy’s own philosophical conception—synergetic anthropology. Khoruzhy recognizes importance of Florensky’s thought but he considers it of historical value only. These and other points are elaborated in presented paper.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) has often been regarded as a direct text in its dealings with a multi-dimensional conception of dualism, insecurity, anxiety and weakness. In the constrained moral atmosphere of Victorian England, where such issues were consciously or even intentionally avoided, the novel seemed to be articulating difficult themes about which society preferred to remain silent. A specific literary tradition, the history of Great Britain, scientific discoveries and lively, scientific debates of the 19th-century are ones of the most significant factors which make The Strange Case so original and memorable. The study poses a number of questions: Why does the history of the double return? What is a meaning of a double in a given context? What is so significant about this concept that it has inspired many others successors (e.g. Stephen King’s The Dark Half, 1989)? Why this motif is so popular? The project of delivering the answers to these questions in a one paper is not straightforward. Therefore, the main purpose of this article is limited to presentation and analysis of a conditionof men in the face of emerging Modernism with a close reference to philosophical ideas of the turn of the century. On such basis, it investigates the foundations of Stevensonian philosophy of dualism.
Powieść The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll i Mr Hyde [Dr Jekyll i pan Hyde] (1886) Roberta Louisa Stevensona jest często traktowana jako bezpośredni tekst o wielowymiarowej koncepcji dualizmu, niepewności, lęku i słabości. Dlatego główny cel artykułu został ograniczony do prezentacji i analizy stanu człowieka w obliczu powstającego modernizmu z odniesieniem do idei filozoficznych popularnych na przełomie wieków.

Articulation between Ethics and Politics in the History of Economic Thought

During its history from Aristotle to Friedman, economic thought has turned itself naturally towards politics as well as towards ethics. This paper reflects on the various ways to understand the articulation between economics, ethics and politics. It argues in favor of a specific understanding: one should look first for what is ethical (rules of just conduct). The implementation of those rules have direct implications for the division and limitation of powers (politics) and once in place allows for rapid economic development. The paper claims that this understanding—which relies on a certain conception of the nature of human beings—has developed throughout the centuries and was dominant at the time of the scholastics. Since then it had to compete with other understanding of economics, politics, ethics and human nature such as found in positivism, marxism or behaviorism.

The article is an attempt to indicate philosophical aspects of the concept of social responsibility which can be found in the writings of Walter Lippmann. There is a short overview of relevant elements of the author’s biography in connection with his philosophical works. Then, the term social responsibility and its evolution in the period when Lippmann’s works were written is described with the emphasis on the cultural and historical background. In the next part, two approaches to the concept of social responsibility in business, which can be found in Lippmann’s works, are presented. The first one refers to the theory of social economy put forward by the author. The other one is related to a specific definition of the society. Social, philosophical and economic theories which were contemporary for the author and which could have potentially underpinned his ideas are indicated as well. Some solutions and proposals suggested by Lippmann are typical of the discussed era whereas others seem to be innovative.
