Studium generalne dominikanów w Krakowie w XV wieku

Romantyczny koniec XVI wieku
The Romantic End of 16th Century

The classical theory of rational understanding of art which was obligatory , during the Renaissance, in the course of two centuries undergoing only slight changes, somewhere about 1600 fairly radically lost its meaning. Both artists, or theoretitians of art, and scientists, writers and poets gradually diverge from this tradition. The new views were diametrically opposed to the classical views, and seem to be closest to the romantic ones, since it was just in Romantism, when a greater meaning was ascribed to the spirit than to the form, and freedom was evaluated more highly than keeping to the rules. A romantic — in a sense — type of aesthetics can be found not only in Patrizi’s theory (art as miraculousness) and Sarbiewski’a one (art as creating), but also in Shakespeare (art as an element), or even in Bacon (art as a game and a lucky trick) and Bruno (there are as many rules as good poets). Even Lope de Vegas and Malherbe’s, cynical conception of poetry was in a sense a form of romantism, although a negative form. It was a reaction against the bombastic aesthetics: a desire to turn in into a joke: the artist was considered to be a priest, whereas he is not more useful than a skittles player. Hance 1600 can be considered a short romantic epizode in aesthetics, although its briefness does not lessen its value in the history of aesthetics.

Philosophy and the Christian Enlightment in Poland

What was the actual sense of the polemics going on in the middle of 18th century between the; peripatetics and the adherents of the "new philosophy”? The subject of that polemics was — generally speaking — the meaning of the peripatetic philosophy for the Christianity of that time. It was not, however, a polemics only about the fate of philosophy, it was also concerned with the problem of the way in which the Christian thought is to be present within the culture of the age of enlightment. Which way of presence is most proper: total negation, or assimilation? Is philosophizing to consist in copying "Courses in Aristotelian Philosophy” written in the preceding century, or should it be essentially contemporized? In the middle of 18th century the current of critical participation cristallizes in Poland, which is accompanied by neihter a lazy doctrinal subjection, nor, a more or less radical negation in the shape of deism or atheism. The point was to work out a new Christian philosophy since it was realized that the peripatetic philosophy is not any more able to solve the problems of the age. Something new had to be found and it was natural to look for that something in the writings of modern philosophers (Descartes, Wolff, Bacon, Locke, Condillac). The representatives of the Christian enlightment freed the Christian thought from the fear of natural sciences and awoke a desire of individual freedom of research in philosophy. Their foreseen in the program eclecticism was an expression of open thinking, able to accept any values discovered in culture. They paved the way for social-political and education reforms ia Poland.

J. H. Newman’s The Idea of A University:
Outmoded or Topical?

Dziś powstaje mnóstwo pytań i nowych ujęć. Stwierdzenie zasadniczej aktualności The Idea of A University nie znaczy, by nie należało koncepcji na określonych punktach zmodyfikować. Najważniejszy z nich to własna praca odkrywcza profesorów. Zdobywanie poznania nawiązuje w jakiejś mierze do społecznego rozumienia natury człowieka.

Łukasiewicza koncepcja metody filozofii
Lukasiewicz’s Conception of Philosophical Method

In the article two conceptions of the philosophizing method proposed by J. Lukasiewicz are presented. The first one (since 1906) was born in the atmosphere of the views and philosophical praxis of the revived Aristotelism of F. Brentana and K. Twardowski (however, it opposed the central position of descriptive psychology accepted ąy Brentana). It can be shortly called thè method of realistic notional analysis. The other conception (since 1927) was formed on the ground of the achievements of mathematical logics (Poland belonged to. the leading countries in this field) and in the spirit of the ideas of scientific philosphy. It was a method of axiomatizing parts of philosophy. These two conceptions proved to be significant for the development of philosophical methods m Poland, and even Lukasiewicz’s metaphilosophical views influenced the style of cultivating thé very logics in Poland.

O idealizmie w sztuce nowoczesnej

Encyklika Aeterni Patris z perspektywy wieku:
(opinie amerykańskie)
The Encyclical Aeterni Patris from the Perspective of a Century

In the article two American opinions analyzing the resolutions of the Encyclical Aeterni Patris {1879) and the results it caused are discussed. The author of the first one, James Collins (Leo XIII and the philosophical approach to modernity, in: J. Collins: Crossroads in Philosophy, Chicago, Regnery, 1969, 300-320) as a philosopher and a historian of philosophy tries to extract Leo XIII’s intentions and stresses the good sides of his recommendations. He sees them in supporting historical studies on ancient and medieaval history and in demanding from a Christian thinker to be open to the contemporary problems. Reasonable philosophizing is always joined to the current of history, it is a continuation. In the light of the old, verified rules the new is better understood, and at the same time the old is supplemented by the new. And although this philosophizing has monolithic features in its very main rules, it is pluralistic in applying these rules. Hawever, Collins also sees bad results of misunderstanding and the wrong application of Leo Xlirs recommendations. The author of the other opinion, James Hennesy, S. J. (Leo XIII’s thomjstic revival — a political and philosophical event, a talk delivered in 1974 at the University of Chicago during the session devoted to the 700th aniversary of the death of St. Thomas and St. Bonaventure — typescript) as a historian of the Church notes the bad results of the Encyclical which actually occured. He sees the Encyclical as an expression and support of the growing authoritativeness in the Church. He seems to ascribe the bad results not to a misunderstanding of the Encyclical, like Collins does, but to the very rule of official supporting one philosophy. In spite'of this he also notices good results of the Encyclical, although the tenor of the article implies that Hennesey would prefer the Church not to publish any authoritative documents on philosophy, or even theology. However, he does not state it explicitly. In the concluding comparison and appraisal of the two opinions it was stressed that Hennesey differs from Collins in mood rather than in the contents of his statements, and — which is more important — in the fact that Collins sees the need to look for balance between the unchanging and changing and pluralistic in the life of societies. He admits the Pope’s right to authoritative defining the unchanging rules, and at the same time he recognizes the thinkers’ right to pluralistic application and interpretation of these rules, including the right to make mistakes.Hennesy, on the other hand, — opting for the right to pluralism and changability seems to lose in his article what is and should be unchanging. It is a pity then that presenting Neo-thomism from before 1878 and the directions of the Encyclical he did not show great a progress the thought of Leo XIII was — progress which was noticed in Poland for example by a non-thomist Stefan Pawlicki, and in England was welcomed by a non-thomist John Henry Newman.
