The Christological hermeneutics of Augustine in Benedict XVI’s Mind
The Christological hermeneutics of Augustine in Benedict XVI’s Mind

abstract | view |  rights & permissions
This article attempts to explore the Christological hermeneutics of Augustine in Benedict XVI’s method of reading Christ. The study is divided into three parts. The first part explores the Christological issues and methods since Vatican II. The proliferation of the Christological hermeneutics ignited the Church (Dei Verbum and Pontifical Biblical Commission) to set some guidelines and controls in order to pave the way to a better quest for the real Jesus. Within this context, Benedict XVI proposed a Christological hermeneutics which present a convincing figure of the real Jesus of Nazareth. The second part of the article deals with the commonalities and distinction of the hermeneutics of Augustine and of Benedict XVI. It highlights the similarities of the theological context of both theologians. Likewise, it presents the continuity of the thought of Augustine and Benedict XVI. The last part explains the Christological Hermeneutics of Augustine in the mind of Benedict XVI. It investigates and defines the Augustinian method of knowing Christ within the framework of Benedict XVI’s personal quest for Christ.

The Pasio Vincentii in Augustine’s Sermones de Sanctis
The Pasio Vincentii in Augustine’s Sermones de Sanctis

abstract | view |  rights & permissions
The article makes a brief exposition of the context of the first persecutions against the Christians, particularly highlighting the persecution of Diocletian, to later analyze the effects of the Constantinian peace. The importance that within the context of the Constantinian peace acquired the cult of martyrs, like the first Christian heroes, is exposed. Later the importance of the literature about martyrs of the first centuries is revealed. In a second part of the article, the sermons that Saint Augustine dedicated to Saint Vincent are studied, namely, sermons 4; 274-277 / A; 359 / B. A detailed study is made of each one of them, both at the rhetorical level and mainly in terms of content, to highlight the ideas and Augustine’s theology. The role that the sermons of Saint Augustine played in the transmission of the Passio Vincentii is particularly stressed.

Peculiarità cristiana della nozione di male in Boezio
Peculiarità cristiana della nozione di male in Boezio

abstract | view |  rights & permissions
This article proposes the philosophical analysis of the concept of evil in Boethius, and the identification of its Christian distinctiveness. Which does not constitute a break with the Platonic tradition; it was precisely the constant confrontation with Platonic and Neo-Platonic philosophers that allowed Boethius to realise an original model of Christian philosophy. The text will proceed with the identification of the sources, both Neo-Platonic and Christian, and among the latter especially the Augustinian ones. The comparison with Augustine will be addressed in the last paragraph. The result will be an understanding of evil dialectically elaborated with Neo-Platonic material, but respectful of the precipitous demands of Christian doctrine, and augmented by the reflection of evangelical ideals, as a moment of the broad and original synthesis of philosophy and Christianity offered by the De Consolatione Philosophiae.

Reflection on the mystery of the Trinity has given rise to various responses to interpret the fundamental dogma of faith. Richard of St. Victor, in the line of St. Augustine, presents the reasons that allow access to the rationality of this mystery thanks to the logic of love, which gives rise to reciprocity, fullness and gift towards the other, which configure the thought of the Parisian master. This approach brings him closer to contemporary authors and his thought and discourse continue to surprise by their originality, depth and intellectual honesty.

Socrates’ method can be compared with that of Christ, since both often answer the questions of their interlocutors with another question, which the article calls a counter-question. The article first examines the literature on questions in the New Testament, particularly in the Gospels, and focuses on the works of Douglas Estes, Paul Elbert, Christof Müller and Martin Leutzsch. It then focuses on the counter-questions that Christ asks in Luke’s Gospel, in order to highlight how Christ wants his interlocutors to participate in a pedagogical dynamic in the dialogue they establish with him by means of their own questions.

El sacerdocio en san Agustín: Communio y Confessio
El sacerdocio en san Agustín: Communio y Confessio

abstract | view |  rights & permissions
The article addresses the theme of priesthood as communio and confessio, showing first of all how the priest must make his life a prolonged Eucharist by becoming not only the minister of the Eucharist, but also how his life must be transformed into bread broken and shared for his brothers and sisters. On the other hand, the union of the priest with the cross of Christ is highlighted, and the Augustinian image of the olive oil mill and the commitment to bear good fruit for God is developed. Following the text of Conf. 10:39, the importance of the priest living in union with Christ is emphasized. Communion implies a participation in the cross of Christ and the four dimensions of the cross of Christ according to St. Augustine and its implications in the priestly life are pointed out. The importance of the priest as an agent of communion and unity within the Church is also highlighted. All these ideas are illustrated with the figures of some of the most famous priests of universal literature.

abstract | view |  rights & permissions
The De Genesi ad litteram constitutes one of the mature works of Augustine, and in spite of the fact that for many years it has remained forgotten, it deserves a place of honor among what are considered to be the great Augustinian works. The present article highlights creation as the work of the Trinity, Augustine’s interpretation of the text of Wis 11:22 in Book IV of De Genesi ad litteram, the relationship between the spiritual sense of Scripture and ecology, the fact that animals are simply creatures, the characteristics of animals that Augustine exemplifies with the fish of Bulla Reggia, the relationship between animals and the four elements, the question of spontaneous generation, the relationship that animals have with the ordo of creation, the mystery of life, the presentation of the seminal reasons or eternal reasons, the superiority of man over other creatures, the mission of the human being to care for and cultivate the world created by God.
