Analytic philosophy remains a vital philosophical tradition, still centrally preoccupied with the analysis of language and thought. The papers in the first half of this volume of The Proceedings of the Twentieth World Congress of Philosophy contribute to the project of developing a general theory of meaning, a continuation of the original Fregean aspiration to get at the structure of thought through the basic structures of language. With the next several papers there is a shift to the analysis of reference for terms, both singular and general. Others have their starting points in essays of Hilary Putnam, while others discuss theories of truth.
